Go! Your own way

This week I watched season one episode 4 of the Netflix original Go! Live your way. It is a show based in Argentina about Mia, who got a scholarship to go to a boarding school for the arts. I would like to describe it as your basic teen show, but with more singing. My high school Spanish teacher recommended it to me. She said it was similar to highschool musical.

As soon as the show started, I noticed some cultural differences. All of the characters wore bright and colorful outfits. In America and American television, characters do not wear extremely colorful outfits. Also, I found it interesting that they were dorming in the school. Dorming in America is not very common. In Argentina, it is very common.

In one scene of the show, The characters were eating in the cafeteria. The camera panned to the lunch menu. The lunch menu said, “comidas rapidas” which means fast food. On the menu, students can have burgers, fries, and tacos. I found that similar to American lunch options. We do not have tacos, though.

Another similarity I found was sports. In the show, there was a basketball game. In America, basketball is very common. One difference I noticed was that jerseys look a little different than American ones. Also, the players were a bit shorter than what is portrayed on American television.

In America, everyone has iPhones. In the show, everyone had Andriod phones. Also, when a character was using a computer, it was even different than American technology. I think that Apple products are more expensive in other countries; therefore, they are less common.

Finally, I noticed what kind of television is popular. At the belong of the episode, a character named Sofia was talking about her telenovela. Telenovelas are extremely common in Latin countries. It is a Spanish soap opera. We do not have telenovelas in America, but we do have soap operas. They are more common among older women, though.

After watching that episode, I learned a lot about the similarities and differences between America and Argentina. I would definitely continue watching this show.
