Ending Hunger by 2030

There are 17 sustainable development goals that people are working to accomplish around the world by 2030. The one that stood out to me that I would like to focus on is ending hunger by achieving food security. Hunger and food insecurity can be caused by poverty, a lack of access to food sources and many threats that are posed on food chain supplies. The biggest issue of food insecurity is malnourishment that can stunt growth in children at a young age. Not to mention they are effect by a stunt in cognitive growth as well.

Here in the United States, you can go to the grocery store and find an array of different foods, including fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables. However, in underdeveloped countries this is not the case. One thing we can do is to ensure that we are not being wasteful with our food. People who are affected by food insecurity here in the United States often cannot afford to eat healthy, which puts them at risk for malnourishment even though they have access to food. This is issue has been associated with a high prevalence of obesity and diabetes in the United States.

It is important to understand that climate change poses a huge threat to our food chain supply. One thing that people are doing around the world is investing in agriculture. Rising sea levels, droughts and a lack of clean world directly influence agriculture. It is well known that rising sea levels will soon result in migration, but it will also result in less suitable growing land. Droughts pose a threat to agriculture, little rain fall can diminish crops. While having unsanitary water sources can increase the risk for food borne diseases.

It is necessary for us to acknowledge the issue of food insecurity and hunger NOW! If we do not, our children’s child will likely go hungry or have detrimental effects of malnourishment.
