Sustainable Goal #1: Ending Poverty

A sign reading poverty.

After careful consideration and deep researching I chose Ending Poverty as my sustainable development goal. I chose this one because in the end all the goals connect to a bigger picture which is ending poverty. Throughout my research I concluded that a lot of the poverty that currently exists as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The United Nations Sustainable Development website provided the statistic that 71 million people were pushed into poverty as a result of the pandemic. Due to the pandemic and a housing problem that already existed more people are being left unable to pay bills and become homeless. A steady income is already such a difficult level to reach let alone during a pandemic.

Ending poverty needs to be addressed in schools because it affects a good portion of the population. A lot of people find it hard to make ends meet and instead of this dividing us, we should be coming together to find a solution to go about ending poverty. We might not have one yet but the more all countries focus on finding a solution the faster someone will come up with a solid solution. The best way to do this is to teach lessons on poverty in classrooms and open the classroom floor to discussion where students can ask questions and provide ideas that could possibly benefit our country. Even if we do not find a solution right away, talking about what to do will benefit our future as students learn more and grow up they will have the opportunity to find a viable solution to our poverty issues. We need to work together to find solutions for all of these goals and our countries would benefit deeply. Starting with poverty will help eliminate others since they are all interconnected.
