Virtual Reality in Education

Virtual Reality or VR is a simulated experience for people that can be like day-to-day life or the complete opposite depending on what you are doing on it. Although most people use it for video games or at least that is what I know it for, it has shown to be extremely beneficial for students. It can do things like create environments that the classroom can’t, improve quality education in specific fields, creates engagement, and peaks interest, among many other things.

Since this technology has semi-recently been discovered, it is often hard to discover where to start when introducing it into a classroom. This video was proven to be helpful when understanding that.

This video explains very good points about deciding to introduce VR in your classroom. Before watching I just assumed everyone would use Oculus Rift S or high end because that is the only one I’ve experienced and seems like the best real-life experience. The points she shared about the high end having to be attached to a computer or the VR sickness and the low end just not being the same experience you’d have makes the answer to which is best for a classroom obvious.

The Oculus Go seems like the most budget-friendly and safe option so they don’t walk into each other or experience motion sickness that will take away from learning. I have also discovered that VR provides downloadable lesson plans for teachers to use, which makes not using VR in class seem like a missed opportunity.

VR doesn’t just have benefits for students, but can benefit teachers lesson planning in multiple ways which can help the student’s learn without it even feel hard or like learning at all. Teachers can make sure things are not repetitive in the lesson, take more time to prepare the lesson thoroughly, and make the lesson fun by adding games and making it interactive for them. All of these things make the student feel like they are not learning and they enjoy themselves. It gives educators the tools they need to make a exciting yet effective lesson for their classroom

    Frances,

I really enjoyed reading your blog about virtual reality in the classroom. It is so crazy to think that students can now have easy access to virtual reality, when we were kids it was rare to come across it. I absolutely loved that you included the benefits that virtual reality can have on teachers, I feel like often times people only talk about the benefit stuff has on students so it was great to see the teachers perspective as well!
