Virtual Reality in the Classroom

As human beings, we learn best through experiences. As teachers we want our students to get as many hands on experiences as possible in order to make their learning experience the most memorable and worthwhile. Unfortunately, we can not take students on a field trip every day to accommodate the lesson being taught. However, with Google Cardboard we can send them on a journey right in our classroom!

Far less complicated than one might assume, Google Cardboard can be created right at our finger tips. By the simple folding of cardboard in to a binocular shape, and the slip of a cell phone into the side to be presented, students can visit more places than they could ever imagine. Apps that would be helpful during this experience are Google Earth, Google Ventures, YouTube, and the Official Cardboard App itself.

Not only is this a fun and innovative way to get students engaged with the lesson, but it is also a great tool when focusing on global collaborations. Through this tool and it’s corresponding apps, students can travel around the world and get a sense of global cultures. This will continue to engage students on the lesson topic, but furthermore will allow them to think more critically in terms of global collaboration. They will be able to see how people live worldwide, and be encouraged to connect as they think of ways to help those in need.
