“Money Heist” and Culture

Given the assignment to watch an episode of a television show in another language using English subtitles, I was dumbfounded for some time. Finally, after countless conversations with my friends and co-workers someone suggested the Netflix show, “Money Heist”. Honestly at first I was thrown off because I was told it was in complete Spanish but my Netflix put an English voice over on the show. After finding the setting to change the show back to its original language, Spanish, I started to fully experience the unfamiliar cultural experience we were asked about.

The show is told from a Spanish woman’s perspective about how she came about being involved in this huge money heist. The weirdest part of watching the first episode was that I had to semi-adjust to getting used to reading television. At first glance it was difficult because for the most part I listen to the show while not always one hundred percent watching the TV. After adjusting to focusing all my attention to the TV I started getting super into the show. The most noticeable difference is that upon robbing the Royal Mint of Spain the characters continuously refer to how much money they will get but in euros not American dollars. Other than this major difference, the people and culture are relatively the same. The people in the show are driven by wealthiness and get distracted while following out an almost flawless plan. There is still a love story tactic to the show and for the most part other than the language difference and the money, the show is exactly like American culture. The masks were of important notice because they are replicated after a Spanish painter’s paintings. This was new to me because I never deeply explored the Spanish culture like that. The land forms in this show are vastly open instead of being more of a city setting like where most of American TV shows take place. It seemed to be very similar to America except for the different currencies and the more open settings.

I will definitely continue to watch the show and I look forward to exploring more of the Spanish culture and seeing if anything pops up as I continue watching!
