Sustainable Development Goal 14 and the fight against plastic pollution

Goal 14- Life Below Water

Goal 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals is Life Below Water. Plastic is polluting our oceans and marine life. A staggering fact is that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

There are ways to combat the mounting plastic problem we face:

-Companies are starting to shoulder their responsibilities of their use of single-use plastic packaging lessoning the previous 300 million tons of plastic waste.

-Global momentum has spread causing countries to take action. Indonesia became the first country to sign on to an actual plan to commit to reducing 70% of its marine debris by 2025.

-Changes and innovations are being made to think of smart and eco-friendly ways to consume and reuse plastics.

Under a new plastics economy

Manufacturers will adopt innovative packaging materials designed with sustainability in mind

Consumers will be empowered to reuse, recycle or compost plastic products after initial use

Waste management facilities and recycling plants would substantially grow to keep up with the current levels of plastic waste.

We all need to collectively take small steps to a world free of plastic waste and pollution.
