Virtual Field Trips while Staying in the Classroom

I chose to work with the K-8 resource category and focus on the Discovery Education resource website that primarily targets virtual field trips for students. Virtual field trips allows students to stay in the classroom, while experiencing different places and opportunities. Due to the pandemic, many schools are either closed or open. If schools are open, they are on a cohort schedule, or only certain classes are in person. To add, many places are closed, or require reservations. Places are also at limited capacity, so many students would not be able to experience these awesome trips.

In the video and article, “Body Confidence Virtual Field Trip,” it teaches elementary students the concept of self-love and self-positivity. There are strategies that are expressed to fight bullying scenarios and gain strength physically and mentally. The six chapters go into specific detail on how to appreciate oneself and build confidence.

Within the elementary and middle school grade levels, students struggle with developing a positive self-esteem. I found this field trip and resource to be useful because this educates students on how to accept themselves and others. Children belittle themselves and this would open their eyes in regards to self-respect. They would be able to learn from watching the videos, while creating their own opinion. The students are in a safe environment with remaining in the classroom and can still participate virtually.

I plan to use this resource in my classroom by allowing one to two virtual field trips every other month. This would allow students to just listen and participate in the activity. They would learn to accept their body and build respect for others. I would also have them participate in other virtual field trips and connect each trip to the lesson that I am teaching. Students would make connections between my lesson plans and trips.
