Exploring another culture through television

I took a look at episode one of Nuestra Lucha Libre. The show follows the lives of Mexican wrestlers and shows what they do inside and outside of wrestling. There were many cultural aspects in this show, there were so many bright colors and featured clips of people playing music on guitars and such. What was similar about our cultures?

While watching the first episode of Nuestra Lucha Libre on Netflix, I noticed a few similar thing about our cultures. The weather in Mexico seemed to be around the same as it is in the United States. From the show it looks like it is a nice warm day in around the spring or summertime. Another similarity that I noticed was the type of food they ate. A lot of the food that was shown on screen is food that I have had in the United States. There was a scene in the episode that showed a farm market with a whole bunch of fruits, vegetables, and healthy snacks. This farm market reminded me a lot of the ones I have seen in my area.

What was different about our cultures?

One of the main differences between our cultures is that Mexico’s main language is Spanish whereas America’s main language is English. A difference I also notices was the way of transportation. In the show it followed one of the wrestlers and it showed him driving a van around and transporting people from place to place. In America we typically do not see transportation like that. Our closest mode to that transportation would be going on the bus.

Any other cultural information I noticed.

I noticed that the buildings that were shown in the show seemed to be very old and vintage looking. It appeared that they have been there for a long time, they were also very tightly placed together. I thought it was so fascinating to see this, I feel like often times in America when a building is looking older it will get remodeled, fixed, or destroyed. It was so beautiful to see that these buildings were being shown and admired for how long they have been up there, and even though the color was fading you could still tell how bright and vibrant it used to be. Overall I loved watching Nuestra Lucha Libre on Netflix and plan to watch more episodes to see more about the Mexican culture and learn more about the sport of wrestling. It was so inspiring to look into the shoes of another country and language to explore more about it.

    Hi Lauren,
Nuestra Lucha Libre sounds like an interesting show to watch. I particularly liked how you highlighted the similarities in cultures between Mexico and United States. I think this is especially powerful because it highlights how at the end of the day, we all are human beings who share more in common than we think. However, it is important to note what makes a culture unique and have its own traditions that are amazing. You did that just as well in the differences section. All in all, I loved reading your article because I love learning about new cultures! Thank you so much for sharing this amazing show–I will add it to my list on Netflix!
