Reflecting on Sustainable Development Goal 13

The target for Sustainable Development Goal 13 is described to, “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact.” Things like rising sea levels and increasing global temperature are some of the things that are slowly creeping upon us.

When the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development occurred climate change was described as, “one of the greatest challenges of our time.” There are fears that the impacts of climate change already had outweighed countries’ abilities to adjust to a more environmentally. We all most likely notice things that could easily be changed for the sake of the environment. I for example at work see customers and fellow employees not care about throwing away perfectly fine plastic bags that were scattered. On the other hand, I put them back up on the rack because the fear of what could happen to the environment and the planet we live on is more important to me.

This video explains more in-depth why changes like rising temperature and sea level are occurring. I always wondered why this topic didn’t frighten others as much as it does to me, it is our world that we are destroying if we don’t take action.

It has been shared that due to Covid-19 it is projected for 2020 to have a 6% decrease on greenhouse gas emissions. Although this is good news it is still short of the 7.6% of annual reduction to limit global warming. It is important at this time we take close look at our actions and what we individually can do to help to world from these impacts.

    Hey Frances,
Sustainable Development Goal 13 is so important to life on Earth. I remember learning about global warming in high school. I was skeptical about global warming when I was in high school. Apart of me believed it existed but I thought it was a problem for generations in the future. However, I always believe that we need to take care of our plant’s oceans, land and atmosphere. Since entering college, I have become more convinced of global warming. Just in the past years the United States has experienced more deadly hurricanes and floods in the south. Droughts have drastically affected communities throughout the world including California. SDG 13 needs to be taken seriously for the future of the planet. Thanks for sharing.
