Sustainable Development Goal 1: No Poverty

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals was created by the United Nations. It includes 17 goals which urges countries to participate in ending poverty, improving education, and protecting our climate. Click here to access all 17 goals to get an overview.

The goal that I will be discussing on my blog post is Goal 1: No Poverty. As the title of this goal suggests, the purpose of this goal is to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere”.

When reading this goal’s progress, it was saddening to see that we are beyond reach to achieve this goal by 2030. The main reason for this is that COVID-19 created a major setback. The poverty levels rose as many people found themselves unemployed around the world because several businesses closed and are still suffering.

Several other factors such as natural disasters contribute to poverty. Furthermore, the UN reported that “only 30% of all countries with data for the period 2015 to 2018 spent between 15% and 20% of total government expenditure on education as recommended in the Education 2030 Framework for Action”.

It is evident that we are not working towards accomplishing this goal in a steady manner. It is not going in the direction in which the UN hoped. Especially as we are still living in the pandemic era, tackling this goal will be difficult. However, it will not be impossible if countries invest their time and resources to make this a main priority. With the right focus and resources, we can works towards removing poverty and hopefully we will see a world where people are living without poverty one day.
