Change Makers

Today, I visited we.org and learned about understanding plastic waste through service learning. Service learning is something I am very familiar with because during my four years at Stockton University, I spent three and a half years working for the Office of Service Learning. Service Learning in a nut shell is learning about social, economic and global issues through projects purposed the make an impact in the community.

We have a huge issue with plastic production on our hands. Pollution is everywhere and effects everyone but plastic is one of the most important pollution issues to tackle. One reason is because it takes more than 450 years for plastic to decompose. As it decomposes into the earth’s soil micro plastics end up in our soil, ocean and food that we eat.

There are three strategies we can teach to help students learn to limit plastic pollution.

  • No Plastic
  • Less Plastic
  • Better

There’s only so much one person can do to fight plastic pollution but by collaborating and working together, we can make a big and impactful change. Using Skype in the classroom can help students learn about what other students around the world are doing to fight plastic pollution. Image the impact we could have if students all spoke together on Skype from around the world about the stradgies of plastic pollution. So much more could be done more efficiently and effectively!
