Virtual Field Trip: Ellis Island

Ellis Island was a immigrant stopping place where millions of people from Eastern and Southern Europe were able to be in the country of the United States. These people would be coming to this country to escape poverty as well as religious intolerance that had gone on in many of these peoples living areas.

The trip moved across the Atlantic Ocean and not all passengers had a comfortable ride as the ship was divided by wealth and class. As many as 3,000 people had been packed on these ships, but again were separated depending on their social beings. There were different religions that were aboard and many different languages being spoken.

This trip had not been smooth sailing. When passangers had arrived in New York they were often found tired an ore down and many explained how the ship was dirty.

On their way to Ellis Island, the passengers viewed a very special landmark here in the United States especially being in New York. The Statue of Liberty. This is the symbol of America and brought happiness to many in passing. Because so many people were on these ships, health officials were checking passengers for any signs of disease.

When arriving, all men woman and children struggled grabbing their belongings to quickly exit the boat to further got identity tags and were registered here in the country. More medical and legal inspections then took place.

Ellis Island was an experience that was captured by so many and will forever be so monumental in the countries history.
