Paradise Corner

In the first episode of Paradise Corner, a young girl named Vera traveled to this settlement/community, Paradise Corner, where she became a “chambermaid,” to a couple. A chambermaid is the house maid who cleans, cooks, and does anything for the owners of the household. She lost her friend who worked at Paradise Corner six months ago, and initially came to the settlement to find her. To add, Vera needed the money, therefore, she was willing to accept any job that they had offered.

This show is based out of Russia and everyone speaks Russian. There is one main character who is named Vera. At the beginning of the show, she seemed to be very quiet and shy. As the episode progressed, she began to open up. She did what she was told to do and did not question the household owners. The male character, who she works for, appears to be the master and is intimidating. I feel as if he has a secret that he is hiding and is the antagonist of the show. The setting of Paradise Corner seems to be a safe settlement that holds many secrets that Vera does not know about. The area seems to be on the wealthier side.

There were a lot of similarities and differences when it came to comparing my culture to the show’s cultural aspects. Some similarities would include driving around in taxis, eating shish kabobs and other food options, and dressing in similar clothes. In Russia, they count money differently and they call it “rubles.” 1000 rubles is equal to $13.65 in American money. They were listening to very distinctive music. It was instrumental and was not pop music. In Russia, they also drove on the opposite side of the road. In the show, they travelled by bus, and their rest stops were very small. They only had an out-door cook and two bathrooms. In America, we do stop at rest stops and can take bus trips, as well. The characters value money and work.

In this town, there are a lot of open farm lands. The weather seemed to look chilly because people were wearing light jackets and pants. Outside of Paradise Corner, people seemed to be living in lower class. People in Paradise Corner were wealthy and from higher class. The landlords have people working for them for money. People still talk to each other and are polite using gestures. Such as; waving, smiling, and nodding. All of the people had similar influences and values such as money, saving, and respect for one and another.
