WE Walk for Water with WE Schools

WE Schools is a unique, step-by-step program that challenges young people to identify the local and global issues that spark their passion and empowers them with the tools to take action. Teachers and students work together to learn about the world and to take action to create meaningful change. WE Schools has fantastic resources, lessons, and handbooks for educators to use in their classrooms. In addition, the way they lay out all their information for the programs is user-friendly and makes it very simple for teachers to follow along.

The four steps of WE Schools are:

  1. Investigate and Learn – students explore topics related to a real-world challenge or opportunity.
  2. Action Plan – Students develop a plan to implement their service-learning project, including one local and one global action.
  3. Take Action – Students implement their action plan.
  4. Report and Celebrate – Students present the results of their service-learning initiatives.

The program that I would love to use in my classroom is the WE walk for water fundraiser. By participating in this program, students will develop an understanding of the current global water crisis, how this crisis impacts people and communities around the world, and how they can be a part of positive change.

The outline of this program is awesome for teachers because it breaks everything down for you step by step on what you need to do, gives you lessons, assignments and includes all the tools you need to make this program successful in your classroom. It also tells you what subjects this program can align with, has questions for you to ask your students, and gives you learning goals for each lesson. Incorporating meaningful lessons like this one into your classroom is essential. Students need to feel connected to the world and feel like they can make a change. Encouraging our students to be a part of something bigger than themselves is our job. WE Schools is such a great tool to do just that.
