Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… is a Bollywood film. This movie is available to watch on the streaming service Netflix.

This film tells a story about family and social class. The film focuses on a wealthy family in India who is very traditional. The father follows traditions and wants to arrange for his son to marry another wealthy family. However, the son falls in love with another woman who is a member of a lower class family. Outraged, the father makes the son choose between family and his true love. He shames him and abandons him for choosing to dishonor the family name. At the end, they come together despite their differences after reuniting several years later in England. 

I am from Bangladesh and I noticed a lot of similarities with Bengali culture and Indian culture. Some of the words and phrases in Hindi sound similar to the Bengali language. Furthermore, the traditional clothing that is worn by Bengalis is similar to the Indian people. The food is also similar to Bengali foods.

There are some differences as well when I compare it to my life in America. In the United States, people have endless opportunities available to them in order to achieve their goals and advance in society. Social class and status is not evaluated to a high degree. Similarities include how the family immigrated to England for better opportunities. This is the same case as a lot of people immigrate to the United States for a better life.

All in all, I really enjoyed learning about Indian culture. It was amazing to see the similarities between my native culture and how it relates. I will definitely watch more Bollywood films!
