Recently I was reading the case studies within The Global Educator book, By Julie Lindsay. I have mentioned this book in my previous blog posts and I have mentioned its worth when regarding global learning, collaboration, and education. Within the case studies, a specific study caught my attention because of its major impact on global collaboration and its potential major influence in education.

The case study focused on the THINK Global School, a unique and innovative school based in New York State that delivers a completely different type of education. More specifically this school takes over 60 students and 12 educators to four different parts of the globe during the school year. This school’s mission is to introduce global learning to the students in the best or most efficient way possible. They believe that by physically traveling the world and living in different areas can truly immerse a student to provide the best learning.

I was amazed and I feel that the idea is incredible and it seems like one of the best ideas to happen to education. Global education is incredibly important and this school realizes that global collaboration is vital to learning and the organization is doing their job at spreading the need for global learning.

A lot can be learned from this school and many of the aspects can be taken in order to provide similar global experiences to any classroom, especially those that may be limited. Think Global School or TGS puts emphasis on interacting with the rest of the world and gaining a global perspective. They also are open to all who want to apply and even provide financial aid for those who require it. Moreover, TGS being a private school does not defer its ability to diversify considering their major idea of traveling and exploring other cultures. They are at times negative ideologies about private school and their inability to appeal to all cultures, colors, and backgrounds and, like previously stated, this school is on the expensive side with tuition at over 80k, but I believe that the impact they are applying to the students who attend over compensates any amount of money to attend. There is a strong possibility that the students who attend this type of education will be one of the highest global thinkers and those who can cause change. These students and teachers have taken global learning to the next level and the school itself is becoming a symbol of what this world can be and what an educational ideology should be.

I feel that education is always changing and THINK Global School is trying something unique that may prove to be extremely beneficial for those involved and those around the world that is witnessing the process. This does not mean normal or traditional schools cannot achieve greatness or make an impact in the world. That being said this is what global education is all about communicating with each other to see what education format or procedures are best for our students and what to do and not to do.

The future of education is near, technology is moving quickly, and the new and fresher technology is being introduced in the classroom every year. Some tend to fail and some succeed in massive ways, one of the collaborations and teaching tools that I found most interesting and useful in the classroom would be Virtual and Augmented Reality and the many features that it brings to the forefront of any study, subject or field of learning.

   Virtual Reality is mostly contained in goggles that produce images and simulates real-life locations or abstracts. They originally became popular with gaming software and its ability to improve gaming experiences, many different brands have adopted the concept and implemented them into their own systems, for their own benefits and profits. These brands include brands such as Playstation VR for the PlayStation 4 gaming system, Samsung VR for the high-end Samsung smartphone and even major Social Media company Facebook’s Oculus; among many others.

These systems have impacted the market in almost every way, from gaming, social media, music and videos; the idea of being immersed in what is being predicted is arguably becoming an important factor in what was is offered to the viewer. That being said, this opens up the need and or reason to pursue the use of these items in the classrooms.

There is a big chance that students are currently utilizing these items in their home, whether they are the higher-end products or the universal Smart Phone VRs that fit close to any smartphone; Students are going home to explore them. As like any other new tech, there are possibilities of use in the classroom. That being said I would like to replicate a few ideas that I have accumulated online to help persuade current and future teachers to see the benefits of VR and encourage their use:

Travel to and explore places all over the world without leaving the classroom. 

• Vr Allows Virtual Field Trips to be even more in depth, Students are able to feel as close to actually being in that location as possible. Furthermore, with updating systems, students are able to interact with the environment or location they are viewing; for example, facts could be shown when interacting or even some physical movements can be made to make it even more realistic.

Experience different careers first-hand.

• VR Opens the doors to many different career paths for students. Using Vr students can see first hand the day to day of doctors, surgeons, historians, artists and more that may spur an interest in them.

Helps with understanding complex subjects/theories/concepts.

• Because VR immerses students, they are more likely to understand the more abstract ideas that may be difficult otherwise, these difficult ideas can include anything from visually seeing something happen or some understand weather conditions in a science class.  

Outstanding visualizations, suited to all types of learning styles, e.g. visual

• One of the biggest parts of the VR is the visualizations that they provide. Because of this, VR supports visual learners but also touches on kinesthetic, auditory and linguistic learners as well.

Social Integration of Students

• VR in the classroom can be made into a social integration event as well because students are more likely to find common interests in the tool they will able to interact with each other and make better relationships that promote learning.

These are five reasons among many more that promote the use of VR in the classroom. The possibilities of the tool are still being discovered and the as technology continues to evolve it is likely that the tool becomes even greater and provides even more learning benefits.

I would suggest all educators test the tool in their classroom and share their ideas with other educators and PLN’s.

• Google provides a global experience with or without the VR goggles and provides over 900 expeditions for your classroom.

Titans of Space

• A great application when focusing on the space and the solar system and can place your students in the center of it all in order to truly understand the concept.

• Available to various VR goggles/headsets and opens to the door to countless experience for your students from natures, to science to culture.

Technology is among each and every one of those and it can be argued that it is around younger people even more. This is the way of the times and as educators, we should come to realize that there is no fighting technology so we need to use it to the best of our abilities.

That being said there is a countless amount of things to do with the use of technology and the opportunities for learning are endless.

For instance, Digital Storytelling is a great way to introduce technology into the classroom while still including senses such as, visual and auditory. With a digital story, teachers and students can express a story in any way they see fit; these digital stories can include pictures, videos, and even vocals to add emphasis and importance.

There are many different sites that can be used for this activity but my personal favorite is the website called Storyboardthat. This website is a digital storytelling tool that presents the stories in a comic book fashion. The user is able to pick scenes, characters, props and so much more within the easy to use interface. This website even allows the user to manipulate the gestures or posture of the characters within each scene and even enlarge or minimize the available props.

With this specific tool, educators are able to introduce technology into the classroom in a fun and lively way. They are able to add text and with the paid versions they can pick from many different comic lengths.

As you can see, the possibilities are endless with this program and not only can an educator use it to prosper a message, it can be used directly by the students themselves so they can learn the functions of a technological tool and express themselves at the same time.

I would recommend this site to all current and future educators so that they may bring a different perspective into their classroom and promote learning through digital technology.

Out of Eden Walk,

I was recently able to explore a new subject regarding a completely global topic. On that explores and highlights the globe in fascinating ways. The out of Eden Walk is transnational experience by Paul Salopek, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and a partner of National Geographic. In this experience, Salopek is traveling the route of our ancestors who migrated out of Africa and the across the globe. His journey will take years to complete and he will have walked 21,000 miles beginning in Ethiopia, our revolutionary “Eden” and his journey will end at the tip of South America. moreover , Salopek’s journey by foot will allow him to witness the many cultures along the way and by the end of his trio will be able to piece together a global mosaic of stories, faces, sounds, and sights.

With that being said, I feel it is important to acknowledge the importance of this trip in regards to global education and also acknowledge is usefulness in the classroom. Salopek’s trip mirrors all that is “Global Education”. This journalist in exploring the world, documenting it and also expressing in for others to witness. This type of information can be further be used in the classroom and can have exceptional results. Moreover, in reference to the study of history, this project can provide topics of study, questions and even spur research.

Today I would like to explore Paul Salopek’s journey and express my ideas and my inferences on the topic and hopefully provide tips on how it can be implemented in the classroom as well. I will touch on three milestones on the journey each milestone is made every 100 miles Salopek’s travels, in attempts to highlight his travels and what he witnesses.

Lets begin:

Milestone 5: The Red Sea

Day 107 – Mile 400 – Elevation 0

On day 107 Salopek’s travels on ship on the Red Sea, he is aboard the MV Abuyasser II traveling upstream towards the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Like all Milestones, Salopek’s post pictures, videos and even the exact coordinates where he is located. Students are able to see where the traveler was during that point in his travels and this track where he is going next. This specific milestone provides a picture of the ship, a video of the ship in route expressing the conditions he is witnessing (The winds and weather ) and also the milestone provides a picture of an encounter he made while on the ship. Moreover this trip was part of Salopek’s first Chapter entitled “Out of Africa”

Milestone 15: Shoreline

Day 293 – Mile -1400 – Elevation 3

On day 293, Salopek touched on his 15th milestone. This milestone was part of his second chapter titled “Holy Lands”. The chapter itself focuses on the lands which are considered holy in the world and this specific milestone was on the Pilgrim Trail from Cairo to Mecca. Like always this milestone includes graphics such as pictures and videos so others able to witness the travelers and feel that much closer to the going ons on the trip. Moreover this specific milestone also contains a link titled “ Spotlight” which contains real conversation and a dialog via online media sites such as twitter: These spotlights  touch on the regional politics, the international news, sports, religion and even the beauty of the nature.

The spotlight location is a great piece of the journey to touch on in classroom. To see exactly what other people are talking about, the topics, the policies and the issues are able to create a connection between the nations an hopefully the globe. Classrooms can see these tweets and posts and discuss how alike or different they may be to American social media.

Milestone 25: Flocks

Day 636 – Mile 2400 – Elevation 3652  

On day 636 , Salopek beings his 25th milestone, at this point his is nearly 2 years into his decade long journey and he has traveled 2,400 miles. On this milestone he witnesses and touches on the flocks near Karacadag, Turkey. By flocks, Salopek means the pastoral people of this area, He even takes a video of a person, presumably from that area directing his herd. This Milestone is like the rest, considering that contains pictures, videos, coordinates and the spotlight section. moreover , the milestone also contains a comment section, where anyone can comment on the milestone and share their ideas. This is a great way to include a classroom, so that they can be part of the journey as well.

Furthermore, this particular milestone opens up the idea of culture. The pictures and videos show a different world that is common to students in the states and it should be celebrated. Students in any classroom in the world can see this milestone and witness something new.

These milestones are but a small part of a much bigger journey, a journey that is still in the process, currently Salopek is traveling through India embarking in new adventures and preparing to post much more information for the rest of the world to see. This is true global education and it can be utilized in the all our classrooms, especially social studies.

Luckily the website provides helpful ideas and resources for teachers to implement in the classroom, these tools are great but as educators we can make even more and continue to share them.

It is no surprise that Global Collaboration is becoming vital in education and is being encouraged by almost every part of the educational spectrum. That being said, there are
Rules, guidelines or norms to keep in mind when collaborating with others from around especially with the use of technology. These norms should be understood in order to provide the best global collaboration for your classroom.
Today I would like to discuss two norms of global collaboration, they include:

1. Be Prepared
2. Have a Purpose

These two norms are a great place to start, for educators who wish to enrich their classrooms through global collaboration. It may seem intimidating at first but gaining an understanding of what is expected will make it much easier to conduct a collaborative lesson and reach different parts of the globe.

For starters, Being prepared, the 1st Norm…

Being prepared to collaborate is very important in order to be successful and to stay stress-free throughout the experience, some Objectives should be kept in mind, including:

Have a plan for connecting

As an educator, you should have a laid out plan for connecting with your desired educator, institution, or anywhere else your teaching may take you. Some Actions to consider and do:

• Consult with PLN and PLC to find like-minded partners for global collaboration.
• Determine What common tools you will use to connect and collaborate.
• Test all the tools beforehand.
• Work out time zones differences and what is possible.

Taking the time to plan out your activity will provide the best results and prevent any potential errors that could corrupt the lesson or prevent learning. Furthermore, to provide even better results try following these Guided Questions, so to lead you in the right direction.

• Is it Clear who this global project is for?
• Is it clear how participants will join?
• Is it clear how participants will connect?
• What common tools will be used?
• What time zone will participants be working in?

2. Determine how you will communicate

Actions:

• Work out how teachers will communicate during the collaboration
• Decide what communication activities will be taking place
• Work out student communication protocols
• Determine the expectations for communication

Guided Questions:

• Is it clear how teachers will communicate during the project?
• Are there any synchronous communication activities pre-planned?
• Are there any asynchronous communication activities pre-planned?
• What are the communication protocols during the project?
• What are the communication expectations during the project?

It is important to have an understanding of our the collaboration will take place, what tools are being used, who is being contacted and how everything will be played out. This will allow everything to run smoothly with little to no issues.

On to the 2nd Norm…

The most important part about norm 2 is realizing the purpose of global collaboration. As an instructor, you need to be able to acknowledge what is trying to be achieved and what learning experiences you are trying to foster. Some Typical Purposes and Guided Questions include:

Purposes:

• Cultural Exchange
• Inquiry and exploration into a topic or topics
• Global Project, short or long, curriculum-based
• Shared outcomes, students summit
• Artifact exchange and/or co-creation

Guided Questions:

• Is the purpose of the project clear?
• Is the length of the collaboration clear? Is it a set length or flexible?
• What are the shared inputs from participants?
• What are the share outcomes?
• Will there be an artifact exchange? Will there be co-creation of outcomes?

Finding and understanding the purpose of the collaboration, and making it clear to your students, will allow the most knowledge to flourish. Not only this but the purpose and reasoning behind the collaboration will determine the amount of planning needed, how the activities will run, and what technology will be needed to express the purpose further.

All in all, global collaboration is an important sector of the classroom and should be utilized whenever possible and when it will promote the most success in learning. There are much more things to know about collaborating online, these are just two things to think about when preparing to collaborate.

Go Collaborate!!!

While reading The Global Educator, which is written and constructed renowned educator Julie, Lindsay, I can not help but acknowledge the many terms and new ideas that emerge on every page. That being said, in part two of the book, which is entitled “Leadership for Global Education”, a very interesting term appears and is called “Teacherpreneur” a mixture of, yea you guessed it, “Teacher” and “Entrepreneur”. At first, I was slightly mind boggled by the name and found it extremely interesting to connect those two concepts together in order to create a new type of profession or job or title. I decided to look into the term and hopefully understand it better and discover ways to incorporate the ideology into my own life, so I will be expressing this term today and hopefully find some ways to spread its use in the life of all educators.

For starters, The Global Educator defines Teacherpreneur as follows:

Teacherprenuer: a leader who “takes all the best practices in education and the latest advances in technology and uses them to blaze new trails in teaching and learning that focus on connection and collaboration.

This definition opens up new perspectives for current and pursuing educators, it gives the idea that teaching is no longer just standing in front of a classroom, it is composed of much more. Teacherpreneurs contain some of the following qualities:

• A Champion for change and realizer of the vision
• Able to introduce new methods of publication and sharing
• Adept at building and facilitating communities
• A researcher
• Innovates from within
• Able to work within and beyond the school culture
• Takes on the roles of manager, director, mentor, and guide as needed.
• Among many more.

It is clear, through these qualities, that becoming a Teacherpreneur is easily attainable. The Global Educator also states that:

“The first step toward being a Teacherpreneur is to be a connected and collaborative educator and education leader using online technologies. The next steps include learning curriculum reform, leading online and offline discussions. Leading new approaches to professional learning, and working to connect students and teachers with the world for meaningful learning. It is “leading by example” method, not a “do as I say” leadership approach, that ensures success”

Applying these steps to your career and modifying the forms in which you interact with your students, school, and even your local and global atmosphere will grant you the title as a Teacherpreneur.

As an educator myself, I will study this subject more and vow to try harder in my career and go above and beyond to make a difference in my classroom and maybe even around the world.

Since the introduction of cellular telephones, there has been controversy on the use of them. Even to this day, there are still signs in public areas which advise patrons to silence phones and in some cases, even digital photography is prohibited. There are in fact particular places where the disuse of phones is understood or even expected. Yet in schools the controversy continues, across the country a school’s rules vary on their use of phones, with some approving them, others banning them, and some finding a balance.

   In reference to global education, The use of technology is extremely important and educators are finding more and more ways to include technology in the classroom. This Is because technology is the single most efficient way of connecting others and making global impacts. This brings me back to the use of cellular devices. Cellphones, modernly referred to as smartphones, have evolved in momentous ways. They are no longer simple “lift and speak” devices. They are in themselves computers with the capability of easily reaching out to other parts of the world in seconds. Their interface has increased dramatically and their ease of use attracts all types of people. That being said, it is fair to argue that we have reached a time in society where technology is literally at the touch of a finger. With more and more innovative devices coming to existence, there is no point in fighting them or disregarding their ability.

   Students of all ages have access to mobile technology, let it be smartphones or tablets. And the new generations of students will be born into this age where these innovations are almost natural to them. This poses the question to, Why ban them in School? There can be many arguments that these devices also pose dangers, but banning them or limiting their use will halt any chance of teaching productivity in these devices.

   It is possible for educators of all subjects to put use to these devices in countless ways, through various applications and online resources. Including applications such as:

ED Puzzle

Flip Grid

Google Classroom

Remind

Homework Apps

Skype, and so much more.

All these applications and more, allow students to utilize their devices in the most efficient ways; proving that smartphones are much more than just Snapchat and Instagram. Teachers are able to accomplish multiple things by promoting the use of smartphones and tablets in the classroom, Including saving money on school-owned devices (requiring less), teaching new software, and spreading knowledge through new modalities, among other things.

This is why I recommend the use of smartphones in the classroom, as educators we need to adapt to our surroundings, there is no point in fighting something that is is not going anywhere anytime soon. Smartphones and technology are going to keep advancing and the only way to get ahead of it is to utilize it to educate our students. Moreover, students are going to be on their devices anyway so why not have them be on it to complete their homework and learn new information.

It is no surprise that Netflix has become one of the most popular entertainment provider and streamer. It has been able to reach a mass amount of people and has made a respectable name for itself in the entertainment industry. That being said, one of the greatest parts of Netflix is the opportunity and availability to view films or television shows in other languages.

This has opened a new whelm of possibilities for global connections and understanding. Although these films and tv shows are made for entertainment, they can also be used on an educational level. Most of these titles are produced in different countries, taking on the tone of the country, easily expressing the cultures and way of life. Not only this but the production of these various films or tv shows are so authentic that the viewer is able to witness different dialects unique to the location. That being said, it is clear that in the educational perspective, the possibilities are endless. 

I took to Netflix to see the available choices in which to analyze. Given my interest in history and entertainment, I choose the TV show by the name of Celia. A show which showcases the life of real-life Singer Celia Cruz, a young black singer in 1950s Cuba.

The show and its setting were extremely interesting to witness, I have always wondered what Cuba was like, especially in that time period given that it was around the time of the Cuban revolution and the time of Fidel Castro. The show allowed me to see the types of people in the time period and the culture in which they lived. This includes ways of speaking, dialect, types of clothing, and even the infrastructure in which they lived, including buildings, housing, and scenery.

Although, it was a different time in history, the culture was still different in comparison to American culture. People spoke in a different matter and the day to to day life varied greatly. One of the most interesting things I witnessed was the leisure time available to the people of Cuba. (Then again this is entertainment so it may be skewed). On the other hand, the way of travel was similar to Americans, with the use of train and cars, and in comparison to the time frame, it seems similar my our culture here in America. 

Moreover, the scenery of the setting was also a great thing to view. Cuba is a country situated in the Caribbean, south of The United States. It is a tropical region so most of what is seen in the show tend to give off tropical vibes, including things such as beaches, high amount of sunlight and even characters who wore light clothing, compared to heavy clothing worn in some places in America. The scenery is just a small part of what makes the series beneficial, considering that the time period in which it is set in a lot of political issues are brought up as well. Fidel Castro had a huge effect on the lives of citizens of Cuba and this is most likely to be seen in the following episodes and seasons. 

In conclusion, The Tv Show which is available on Netflix opens the door to a new world, one that has connections that are similar, but yet very different in many ways. It may be enlightening to see something like this in order to grasp the reality of the different cultures and experiences around the world. It will provide a greater perspective on global learning and global education.

Although a huge fan of Social Media, I never once took to Twitter, it simply never called my attention. Its system and its limitation, as a young adult, did not catch my interest. Since its creation, I have known about Twitter about Twitter and saw its worth in delivering information to the public and connecting the users on a global level. Moreover, I can also say that I have three stocks in Twitter and those stocks have been steadily growing.

With that being said, my usage of Twitter did not begin until my participation in my most recent Education Class at Stockton University in Galloway New Jersey. This class, which focuses and encourages learning on a global level has implemented a learning experience through Twitter. The instructor encourages the students to use Twitter to construct a Global PLN or Professional Learning Network of educators around the world.

Being part of this class has allowed me to connect with the other educators, in ways are were unknown to me. These ways include the sharing of helpful links, articles, and technology that could assist my future as an educator. Furthermore, the feature within Twitter, which allows individuals to participate together on a certain topic, called Twitter chats, which have opened up the possibility to further learning and global connections.

Twitter has opened up many doors for my future career and I expect to utilize it in the future to both assist me in being a better teacher and to find new and innovative ways to teach my students about technology and globalism. And although I now find it a very powerful tool, at the beginning there were many things I did not care for. At first, I despised using the app and hated the functions are provided, but as a continuing learner myself, I needed to take the time to study the application and see its worth. I soon discovered its ease of access and from there everything took off.

I was then able to truly analyze Twitters ability to connect learners and I can truly say that I have learned a plethora of information from other educational users. The twitter chats allowed me to think about topics that I never thought to think about, For instance, my most recent Twitter chat included a conversation about Exercise and the way educators can implement movement in the classroom all while connecting students of all ages to the world.

Twitter has been able to connect with the Rest of the World and has expanded the possibility of connecting Globally with other educators. Those within Twitter have thought me about new Tools, new methods and new perspectives.

I recommend this social networking tool, for professions and ever educator, because in order to evolve and provide the best for our students, we need to continue to learn and this requires collaboration with others who are on the same mission.

            In 2015 seventeen Goals named as the Sustainable Development or, commonly known the Global Goals was introduced. These goals were put in place attempt to alter the dramatic changes that the human has had on the environmental world. These Sustainable goals of SDGs are actually a continuation of previous goals,  made at the turn of the century, commonly referred to as Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These past goals were in place to cover the following:

1. Poverty
2. Education
3. Child Mortality
4. Gender Equality
5. Maternal Health
6. Disease
7. Environmental and Global partnerships

The SDGs were implemented in 2015 after these past goals were, although successful, did not fully solve the problems at hand, The New STGs expanded the goals to include:

2. Zero Hunger
3. Good Wealth and Wellbeing
4. Quality Education
5. Gender Equality
6. Clean Water and Sanitation
7. Affordable and Clean Energy
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
9. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
10. Reduced Inequalities
11. Sustainable Cities And Communities
12. Responsible Consumption  and Production
13. Climate Action
14. Life below water
15. Life on Land
16. Peace and Justice Strong Institutions
17. Partnerships for the Goals

That being said, Microsoft, one of the largest producers and innovators of technology, has created a course specifically designed to teaching and spreading these goals on the nation that, in order for these goals to work, every person, community, every country, needs to be involved. With this in mind, it is important for educators from all parts of the globe to be connected to the sustainable development goals and make it their mission to spread the word and ignite the flame of action.

Luckily, The Microsoft-led course offers a myriad of tools that educators can use in their classroom. These tools vary from films, Comics, and other great activities.

The course mentions, these videos, among others can be used in the classroom in various ways, including turning the films into lessons, by stopping at key points. That being said these videos can be used in many ways. What are your ideas? Comment below!!

These videos are just one way to establish these Goals in The Classroom. The course also provides ways to connect the classroom through technology tools such as Skype of Flipgrid. These tools leave room to learn the goals online while also implementing Global learning a necessity to the completion of these Global Goals.

The main thing to keep in mind is that teaching these goals is very important and educators need to take steps to spread the word, but the good news is you are not alone, Microsoft, Educators, and countries all over the world are on the same mission as well. Moreover, with available tools more and more people are able to become part of the global mission.
