I have been serving in higher education for over 15 years now. After graduating from Duke University with a BA in Psychology and African American Studies, my plan was to volunteer as an AmeriCorps VISTA at UCLA for one year then attend graduate school. However, My plan was not The plan. In my position at UCLA I worked with many students who were struggling to “survive” the college experience. I helped to make sure that they were as successful as possible in creating and reaching their goals. I stayed there for the next five years designing college prep programming for under-resourced schools in LA County ranging from pre-K through 12th grade. When I decided it was time to leave LALA land, I came back home (NJ) and began working at Marymount Manhattan College developing recruitment strategies for transfer students at community colleges. Once of those colleges was Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC), my current home away from home. At RVCC I ran the Admissions and Recruitment Office for a few years while I earned my MA in Organizational Leadership at Rider University. I now oversee the First Year Experience Office, orienting, advising and retaining incoming students. I also serve as an adjunct professor for the Student Development course and a club advisor for the Black Student Alliance.
My daily goal is to ignite a spirit of self-worth, advocacy and determination in each student I encounter.
I rely on my spirituality and meditation to keep me focused and centered; I am trying to add working out to that list… I have a heart for babies and when I am not with my friends’ or family’s kids, I am volunteering as a Sunday school teacher for ages two through six, or shopping. Oh, and I bake a mean cookie.
