Dawn N. Watkins is an instructor at Stockton University in Galloway, N.J. She currently holds a Masters in Instructional Technology from Stockton University and is currently pursuing her doctorate degree in. Ms. Watkins’ “meager beginnings” compelled her to support initiatives for diversity, STEM programs and other educational opportunities for underrepresented groups. Her commitment to philanthropy has led to the donation of computers to the Bridgeton School District and to the Boys & Girls Club of Vineland. Ms. Watkins continues to be an avid advocate for the students of southern New Jersey, primarily focusing on Cumberland County (Bridgeton, Millville and Vineland).
Ms. Watkins established the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Cumberland County branch. Under her leadership as president, the AAUW-CC branch will sponsor educational programs and STEM opportunities such as Tech Trek, Tween Tech and Teen Tech. AAUW-CC collaborates with businesses and local organizations to reduce hunger and promote community growth. Her dedication to the community and STEM education continues to encourage girls through workshops, such as YES! (Youth Empowerment Summit!). As a panelist, she shared her personal experience, love for technology and inspired the girls to take advantage of every presented opportunity.
Ms. Watkins continues to extend Stockton University programs outside of Atlantic County. “Stockton University is committed to the positive development of southern New Jersey” is an ideal Ms. Watkins upholds through community engagement and civic responsibility. Her work includes recruitment assistance for programs such as the nationally recognized CSI Camp, Tech Trek, Tween Tech, Teen Tech and the S.E.A.S. program. She also represents the university and its programs at community events. Ms. Watkins presents and facilitates workshops for underrepresented and minority students visiting the Stockton campus. Her efforts have led to growing interest in the university and its programs from students and residents of Cumberland County.
She was instrumental in bringing the Early College High School (ECHS) Initiative to Cumberland County. Her involvement resulted in all of the county high schools participating in Carver’s STEM-based curriculum, which allows high school students to graduate with their diploma and associate’s degree. The initiative has resulted, thus far, in 62 Bridgeton High School students beginning their high school and college careers on the Cumberland County College campus. Ms. Watkins continues to increase awareness about the program, as well as promote local partnerships for internships and opportunities for community engagement.
Ms. Watkins serves as a board member, liaison and chair of Community Development for the Carver Foundation. She is pursuing an Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership at Stockton University. As an employee in the School of Education, Watkins serves on multiple committees at Stockton and within the local community. She remains dedicated to empowering young girls, fostering community engagement and advocating civic responsibility.
