Use a semicolon between independent clauses joined by a conjunctive adverb or a transitional phrase.

The dream of the Black Knight is often seen as fundamental to Chaucer’s plan to console John of Gaunt; however, it can be usefully understood as a deepening characterization of the narrator. After all, the narrator is the one dreaming; doesn’t it make sense that the dream illustrate his needs?
