Virtual Reality In the Classroom

Hello and welcome back to my weekly blog!

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

In this week’s blog, we are going to discuss how virtual reality can contribute to successful global collaborations in the classroom! Here we will go over 4 main things:

  1. What is Virtual Reality? Virtual Reality aka VR is a form of Stimulated Reality. It is a 3D interactive experience. Think of it as being transported into your favorite TV show! You use a set of goggles either one connected to your computer or a cardboard one that you can place a phone into!

2. What can it be used for?

VR is currently used in the army for tasks such as a simulation of being in the field. It is also used for students!

Airmen from the 334th Training Squadron try out the new virtual reality technology of the 334th TRS at Cody Hall, on Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, June 28, 2019. The 334th TRS incorporated a VR classroom to teach Airfield Maintenance more efficiently with visual simulation. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman Seth Haddix)

Students, however, can also use VR. Students can use VR to transport them into the topic they are learning. For instance if a student is learning about the cambers of the heart, by using VR they can actually feel like they are inside the heart chambers. This not only engages students but allows them to have a hands-on experience with the topics they are learning!

3. What are some lessons for virtual reality?

While you can create your own lessons you might need some inspiration or help!

To create lessons there are several apps and websites to help you do so. However, there are many premade videos and lessons that are available to use.

Some websites to create VR lessons:

These two links that will help you create lessons, but there are many other resources to help you as well.

4. How does VR help with Global learning?

Global Learning in a wonderful tool and so is VR! By using both of these tools you can really engage your students and help further their understanding of topics! While globally learning, you will be connecting with people all around the world. Therefore, VR can be used to transport students to the area that they are learning about in, to get a feel for their lifestyle and culture. Another way VR can be incorporated is by using it as a textbook. For instance, if you are talking with someone around the world about how their building is made, the student can use the VR to see how their buildings are made VS their own building.

These, of course, are just a few examples of using VR for global collaboration! However, as technology advances, I feel as though there will be many other ways to use VR for global learning!
