The Office of Financial Aid hosted two Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion events sponsored by both the Compass Fund and the Office of Student Transition Programs this spring. The evening events were held on Wednesday, February 6, 2025 and March 25th, 2025 and gave current students an opportunity to receive one-on-one assistance in completing their FAFSA from counselors in the Office of Financial Aid.
The events began with a brief presentation by Marielena Dottoli, Assistant Director of Financial Aid, who discussed what students and families should know about the 2025-2026 FAFSA and the application process before completing the application. After viewing the presentation and enjoying some light refreshments, staff led students and their families to computer labs, where staff members assisted them with completing the 2025-2026 FAFSA.
The atmosphere was a mix of anticipation and hope, as many understood that completing this application was a crucial step toward achieving their educational goals.
Among the attendees was a current Stockton senior who will graduate this spring and attend graduate school this fall shared her story. “[Financial Aid has] helped me tremendously in pursuing higher education,” she said. Her words resonated with many others in the room, proving the impact that financial aid can have on a student’s life.
The FAFSA determines a student’s eligibility for federal, state and some institutional aid programs. For some, the aid they receive is the deciding factor in whether they will attend college.
The dedication of the Financial Aid Office staff was clear in their patience and thoroughness. They moved from one station to another, ensuring that every student’s questions were answered and that the process was as smooth as possible. Their ability was a comforting presence for those who felt overwhelmed by the application.
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) is still in the process of implementing a major overhaul of the processes and systems used to offer federal student aid, which started with the 24-25 aid year. As a result, some students and families have faced challenges when attempting to complete their applications.
“We want to see our students succeed. And we want to do everything we can to provide them and their families with the support they need to be successful,” said Dottoli. “Hosting these FAFSA Completion Events is one way that we are aiming to support our students,” she said.
During the events, financial aid staff were able to assist around 40 attendees.
For those that were unable to attend the evening events, the Office of Financial Aid also hosted several weekday FAFSA Completion Appointments throughout March and April. During these appointments, students were provided one-on-one assistance with the FAFSA. Staff members have seen over 30 individual appointments so far.
“We want students and families to know that we are here for them. Whether they simply have a question or need help with their application or with any step in the process, we are here to help,” said Dottoli.
Students and families who have questions or need assistance with the process are encouraged to reach out to the office in-person, via email or phone. Phone appointments are available at stockton.edu/contactfinaid.
