George Hughes Hepworth

George Hughes Hepworth, the preacher and journalist was born on February 4, 1833. As  he grew up he had the desire to become a preacher. During his early life, he was always at the head of the class. He was an author who had many ideas. He attended Harvard Divinity School in 1852. During his studies he came to question slavery. When the Civil War broke out he was appointed the Chaplain to the Forty-Seventh Colored Regiment in the U.S. Army. After the war he began preaching in New York and did all he could to help the poor. After the Kurdish Massacres shocked the world, Mr. Hepworth traveled to Armenia to discover the truth behind them. He wrote “Through Armenia on Horseback” to share his findings with the world. His health began to fail shortly after his return from Armenia and he soon died in June 1902. It was said that Mr. Hepworth’s life was “His life was one filled with splendid Christian activities.
