Being Informed On Youth Violence

WEschools is a website that provides teachers with many resources and information for use in their classrooms. There is a wide variety of resources offered. These resources include workshops, informational packets, campaigns, awards/grants, and more. This can be very beneficial towards any teacher, especially someone who is just beginning their career.

Information that can be found on the website

One of the most important features of this website, in my opinion, is the information given on serious topics. These topics include things like violence, mental-health, bullying, poverty, racism, and diversity.

Teachers Modules

One module that struck my attention was the “Youth Violence Module”. In this module you can find facts and statistics, definitions, how to take action, materials, worksheets, and references.

The facts and statistics section includes very sickening, saddening, and eye-opening information. Making teachers aware of these awful things will put things into perspective and inform them that these things unfortunately do happen. Having this perspective will allow teachers to learn what they can do and be on the lookout for any warning signs.

Facts and Statistics

Including definitions and context in this packet will give teachers an idea of who can be involved in this violence. Also, it will expand their vocabulary when needing to report any violence. Knowing these aspects of violence can make them more aware of signs in their classroom. This section also describes what violence looks like in the school setting along with in the town and in the country.

Definitions and Context

Knowing the warning signs and risk factors for something as serious as violence is a necessity. You cannot help a student if you do not know that they are in trouble. Teachers need to be able to know their students and a portion of what goes on in their life. Being tentative and constantly noticing things can be very helpful in identifying a child involved in some kind of violence.

Warning Signs/Risk Factors

Knowing what to do in a situation where a student has violence in their life is so important. Not doing anything in these situations can result in someone getting hurt or loosing their life. This website informs teachers on what they can do if they suspect violence. This includes things like asking questions, planning the next step, connecting to resources, and more.

All in all, I was very satisfied with the resources and informational provided by this website. Exploring this website would assist teachers in understanding serious topics and other things like awards, workshops, and more. I will definitely be revisiting this website and brushing up my knowledge on these topics before teaching. Having this knowledge will ensure the classroom setting is safe, inclusive, and at its best.
