Reflecting on actions can be a huge game changer
There are many resources that can be used to improve the classroom environment as a whole from We.Org. The one resource that stood out to me the most from the beginning was the “We Embrace Anti-Racism” resource.
I thought that we had made progress with the battle against racism. Although I see, that’s not the case thanks to social media. There are many adults who have racist tendencies and unfortunately they teach their children the same things. It’s to the extent where even some students in college do a racist action and call it a joke once getting called out by others. Racism is still a very big problem in the world overall. We may not ever be able to completely end it one day but what we can do is all make steps towards it. The best way to do this is in the classroom. This is the reason I strongly believe that this resource would be very helpful in my classroom in the future.
The overall lesson of the resource is very simple. There are four objectives in total which are down below.
The chronological order goes very well in which students first learn about racism, then learn how systematic it is, where change begins, and plans for themselves. As students go through the lesson they answer questions critically. After that there is reflection that can be made.
I feel like most people don’t remember that there are consequences to their actions and their actions affect many people. The same actions can just continue to support the racist system or go against it. Teaching this at a very young age is important because then there will be better chances at having more people informed and educated about race. The more it is taught the lower chances there are of racist instances occurring. I believe that it is even more important now to teach anti-racism. Especially because some areas in our country want to ban the teaching of racism. It would be best to move forward instead of reverting back.
