Virtual Field Trip to Easter Island

Easter Island has always piqued my interest. I always found it strange that there were giant stone statues of faces along the island. How did the statues get to where they are? How did the people thousands of years ago have the tools to move these heavy stones? I took a trip to Easter Island virtually thanks to this website. Seventy-five archaeologists set out to explore how hundreds of these statues were moved. They tried to use the tools and materials that were available to the ancient islanders and struggled.

What the website looks like: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/easter/

A part of the website allows you to learn how to move a megalith, a large stone. It gives you past attempts such as; rock, roll, drag, oral tradition, and other theories and attempts done by previous people.

Another part of the allows you to explore the island and learn about the statues and history. It’s interesting how each part of the island is very different and has researchers questioning how these statues were transported to certain parts. Pictures and videos are provided to show what the statues and areas look like.

The website also provides details of the islands history. It explains how the first inhabitants arrived, facts on the stone giants, and more. Definitely a website you guys should explore if Easter Island interests you!

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Hello Lauren! I really enjoyed your blog. I liked how you started it off with questions about East Island. I’m also very curious about the answers. The pictures you included fit well. Also, I enjoyed hearing about the other things this website allowed you to do, like moving the rock and learning more about the island. Well done!

  2. Hello Lauren,
My name is Lia. Easter Island has also always piqued my interest as well. My main question is how these statues came to be. The manpower that would be needed for this mysterious world treasure is unimaginable. Thank you for sharing a blog about the science and history behind the world’s treasures. It was interesting to learn that they tried using the tools of the islanders in order to truly find out how it happened. There are many conspiracy theories about how Easter Island came to be. However, after reading this I feel as if the virtual field trip you went on, might help me if I went on it too. I loved the colors and graphics as well as the images on the website. It is very bright and colorful.
