Technology has provided so many different ways to promote inclusion in the classroom. While reading chapter 2 of Sail the 7 C’s with Microsoft Education, I came across the section where a teacher used Minecraft: Education Edition with a group of students who have difficulty communicating with one another.
Before reading about this teacher’s experience, I never even knew that there was an educational edition of Minecraft. At first, I was extremely surprised by this, but as I read I realized how much this can help students’ social skills improve. Monika Limmer, the teacher, found that students in her class who were normally quiet ended up teaching others their techniques and ideas. I never thought that Minecraft could be such a great learning experience for kids to learn how to communicate with each other to have proper resources to reach their goals.
Another amazing finding was that a nonverbal student in the class the often felt left out ended up being the person that other students went to for help. This technology gave the student a chance to communicate with others in a way he never had before. I was very happy to hear this and hope it increased his sense of belonging in the classroom. This technology truly gives everyone a chance to feel equally Included.
Overall, Monika found that Minecraft was a great way for all of her students to contribute at all different levels. I was happily surprised to see how much a video game was able to increase the self-esteem of all of the students. True inclusive education becomes more possible as technology advances to allow all students to fully participate.
