The benefits of Google Docs in the classroom

I recently read an article on the benefits of using Google Docs and the Google Drive platform for teachers. While much of the focus in the collaborative education world is filled with the new innovations made by Microsoft and the One Drive system, sometimes the original can be even better.

Originally launching in 2006, Google docs revolutionized the way students and teachers work with one another in the classroom and at home. Allowing live updating and cloud-based storage the efficiency and ease of access are undeniable.

The system allows a vast amount of users to simultaneously work on a document being one of the first software options to feature real-time saving and uploading to a network. For teachers, this makes it a no-brainer for facilitating an active work environment in classrooms especially with it being one of the only word processors which were totally free.

Shortly after its release the integration of Google Sheets and Google Slides only made this choice easier. With this, students would have a single website to do a multitude of assignments in a wide range of subjects with applications in every classroom. Teachers could share their lecture presentations with the entire class with the push of a button.

So while in 2023 there is a range of options for cloud-based collaborative programs, don’t sleep on the classics.
