Technology in Education: An Overview

By: Nicole Ippolito

I will write about using technology in education, based on the article I found.

Technology has had a huge impact on education. In public schools, there is one computer distributed for every five students, resulting in the schools paying over $3 billion a year on digital content. In many schools, students are given a district owned computer, resulting in students having access to their education 24/7, regardless if they are physically at their school or at home.

What is one to one computing?

Students are being provided with district owned computers that they can take home. The meaning behind this is the hope of helping students achieve goals such as:

  • Helping students become technologically skilled
  • empowering students to do more complex work by giving them access to online applications and resources
  • Improving communication among teachers, students and classmates
  • Improving the management of schools

Despite all the great ideas that will come out of 1 to 1 computing, districts have faced financial issues.

Blended learning:

The idea of blended learning combines face to face instruction, and technology based instruction. This gives students the opportunity to learn their content face to face with their instructor, then apply their knowledge through online applications at home, for homework. Technology in the classroom ties into how standardized testing is evolving. Aside from a test taken by paper and pencil, many standardized tests are on the computer. Luckily for teachers, there are many resources to use when students are taking online tests to prevent the student from cheating. The U.S. Department of Education is pushing for a greater use of technology, especially when it comes to testing.

Digital materials used in the classroom: why and how?

  • Engage students
  • Ability to keep content updated
  • Greater responsiveness to individual learners

Textbooks are something that have evolved from a physical book to something that is now online. This will be beneficial for students as they will not have to carry around a heavy book, because they will have it downloaded right to their computer. This is also beneficial to the teacher as they have access to see who has annotated the textbook chapters.

Online learning:

During the pandemic, students had no choice but to engage in school online. Students developed the opportunity to learn from home. Online courses are always an option now a days, too. Online classes give the student an opportunity to fit certain classes in with their schedule. Online school is beneficial when there is inclement weather, resulting in the school closing.

The advance of technology has evolved the ways students learn tremendously. Technology is extremely beneficial to not only students, but the school itself, and the teachers.
