Week 13: WE Diversity

By: Gianna Gras

Something I think is important to have in a classroom is diversity and inclusion. However, even though this is a good thing that should be in all classrooms, sometimes that is not the case or teachers do not know how to handle it. So, to be prepared for my classroom, I took a look at the WE Diversity module to see how I can be prepared for diversity in my classroom.

While reading this module, some things I leaned about were understand the relationship between trauma and diversity and inclusion, to ensure that students are prepared to work in a diverse classroom environment and collaborate with others who bring new perspectives and life experiences, and to learn how to incorporate diverse perspectives into the classroom (including teaching students about cultural differences) to ensure the classroom is welcoming, respectful and safe. Typically, we think diversity and inclusion mainly talks about race, but this module talks about all the different ways in which diversity happens in other situations like sexual orientation, gender, economic status, disabilities, and many other forms. None of these should be overlooked in a classroom by anyone, especially the teacher.
