What is Verification?

Once a student files the FAFSA, they may be randomly selected by the U.S. Department of Education, for review in a process called Verification. Stockton University is required by federal regulations to verify the accuracy of the information reported on the student’s application.

In order to comply with these regulations, we may need to collect additional documentation and/or have the student transfer data from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) into the FAFSA.

To View Requirements:

  • Go to go.stockton.edu
  • Log in with your go-portal credentials (For new students, these will be in your admissions packet)
  • Click on the financial aid tab
  • Click on the “Financial Aid Requirements” graphic on the left-hand side of the page
  • Select the aid year
  • View your requirements

*You can click on the requirements to either download the required documents or get instructions on how to complete potential required electronic processes. Students who were selected for verification will also receive email notifications informing them of their outstanding requirements.

See below for information on how to complete specific requirements and how to complete the process.

If you Have Required Documents:

When you view your requirements, you may see that we are requesting that you hand documents in to our office.

You can submit completed documents to finaid.docs@stockton.edu or fax them to 609.626.5517. Please include the student’s name and Student ID number (Z Number) when submitting documents.

If you Need to Use the Data Retrieval Tool:

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) transfers your IRS tax information directly into your FAFSA. We may request for you to use the DRT for the student and/or parent to supply the U.S. Department of Education with your most accurate tax information. Click here for instructions on using the DRT.

If you Need to Order a Tax Return Transcript or Verification of Non-Filing Letter:

We may request a Tax Return Transcript (different from a 1040 (tax return)) if it is necessary for us to report additional information to the U.S. Department of Education. Click here for instructions on ordering a tax return transcript.

We may request a verification of non-fling letter (this verifies that you did not file a tax return for a specific year) if it is necessary for us to report additional information to the U.S. Department of Education. Click here for instructions on ordering a verification of non-filing letter.

How to Complete the Process:

Once you have filled out your required documents, send them to the Office of Financial Aid for processing. You can either email them to finaid.docs@stockton.edu or fax them to 609.626.5517. You must include the student’s name and student ID number in the email or fax to ensure all documents are processed successfully. Upon receipt of the last documents, verification can take up to 4 weeks.

The Next Steps:

After we receive all required documents and information, we will review your account. After reviewing the information, we may determine that we need to collect additional documentation or information. Check your Stockton email regularly for updates.

Once the verification process is completed, you will be awarded all financial aid for which you are eligible. Learn the next steps at stockton.edu/fafsa.
