Case Studies

I read into the case study 3.3 of Leah Obach and Devon Cadwell, and I found out about more collaborative tools that I can use as a future global educator to reach out to other parts of the world. In this case study, it is said that Leah and Devon are currently teachers at an elementary school. These two teachers had their students learn globally consistently for a whole year. Which leads their students to learn and share many online collaborative projects and resources. Digging into more about the teachers, I found that Leah has a Twitter and a blog where she has many informational blog posts. I had recently checked out the one titled “Tech Tools to Connect with.” In that blog, she gives us a few collaborative tools of use during this pandemic, and this includes Microsoft office 365, seesaw, google suite for education, and Flipgrid. Each of those tools is good to use to connect with the kids online in your classroom and outside the classroom! I am proving her Twitter @mrsobachsclass and a link to her blog click here!

Case Study 3.1 describes Mali Beickley from Canada, who has 34 years of experience in teaching. Over the past 12 years, she has used ICT and successfully had her students connect, communicate, and collaborate with several classes worldwide. As a classroom teacher, Mali used global education projects to integrate reading and writing strategies into projects that connect to others around the world. Mali has her students get involved in project competitions and global workshops! She is an assistant coordinator of the IEARN Canada and designs and facilitates many international projects. She has created her own way to connect herself and her students from people around the world. To learn more about Mali follow her on Twitter @dreamteam51 and also go check out here website iearn-canada.org

Thank you to everyone who has followed along my journey with these blog posts! I hope everyone has enjoyed it and Happy Holidays!!

Gear VR

I explored using the VR with Earth google tours, and it is nonetheless but awesome! You can see the earth’s map from a 3d standpoint. The visual is as if you are looking on the outside looking in down on the world. In other words, it is a 3d model that you can interact with using the Gear VR. It allows you to go anywhere in the world of your choice to explore in 3D! Without the Gear VR on Earth tour, you can see the entire world that has been captured through helicopter imaging; however, the world is not 3D; it is flat. To take a small tour of the earth in 3D, click here! Earth google tours give you selections of where to visit in the world, and it offers a search bar where you can type in the location, and it will bring you to it instantly.

Samsung has its own Gear VR, which happens to be very popular, but it can be pricey. An alternative for the Gear VR headset by Samsung is the google cardboard. Google cardboard is capable of giving a 3D effect, just like the Gear VR Samsung created. Although they are similar, they are also different quality-wise and technology. Google cardboard is exactly how it sounds because it’s made out of cardboard! It supports most phones up to 6 inches and would cost about $20. Now it doesn’t have all the features and luxuries the Samsung gear has, but it is good to try for a demo. I personally have had experience with the Samsung VR headset as it was a gift to my brother. I’d say it is worth the money; it makes you feel like you are in the game or whatever it may have been. I haven’t tried it with Earth Tour, but that is definitely where I am headed to!!! If you would like to find more about good cardboard to give it a try, click here!

Success Using this Tool for Global Collaborations

I believe that using Gear Vr can be of great use in Global Collaborations. This would be a great tool for projects. Students can be assigned a project about another country, and they can use this tool to help them create their project, giving them more insight into the country. They can use VR and google tours to look at their assigned country and describe it. This is another opportunity given to kids to better describe another country that travels beyond their classroom walls! Also, it is a good way to keep students interested, and this can bring real-life experiences!

Out of Eden Walk

“Out of Eden Walk” is a platform that shares many resourceful, educational post. They have a variety of subjects you can learn from! I happen to check out a few myself self one of which I got to share the interest of Jamal Glaves and the wildlife of Antillean manatees. Jamal Antillean is now a conservation biologist; however, it started off when he turned 11; he was love at first sight with exploration! Ever since he joined the research team, it has been his mission to help rescue Antillean manatees. Two decades later, Jamal has the program coordinator position for the Belize Manatee Conservation program at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute! To learn more about endangered manatees and how you can contribute, click here!

Reflection-I think it’s fascinating that he has such a strong interest in that area at such a young age! That was his calling, which is great. Also, tying into this, it is important to help preserve wildlife and create a cleaner environment for them!

Another exploration I came across was ” Plastic Pollution,” which discusses the use of plastic and its effect on the environment. Plastic can end up being recycled and reused, especially in areas like medicine and public safety. However, it is said that 40 percent of plastic is only used once before it is thrown out into the environment, where it lingers for a very long time. Eventually, the tossed plastic will break down into bits sized pieces called microplastic, where it is usually consumed by animals and people. We can all pitch in and keep the environment clean by not using plastic bags, bottles, straws, disposing of waste properly, and recycling. This will help make a difference in the community. To learn more about pollution, click here!

Reflection- Most of us today are all guilty of littering, and it is articles such as this that make you feel guilty for the time you did. Litter is a major cause of global and health hazards. To see pictures with massive litter everywhere saddens me. Awareness should be spread and it starts with someone like you!

In addition, I learned about ” Infectious Disease” which discusses the process of how people get sick. The initial start of someone getting sick is when an organism that is big or small invades the body and infects it. These infectious agents determine the severity of the infection and some can be life-threatening. Bacterial and viruses attack the human body on a cellular level. Parasites such as tapeworms can enter the human body and feed off the blood and nutrients without killing the host! Here is an article to learn more in-depth about this topic!

Reflection- Infectious disease is something many of us have experienced throughout our lifetime. Whether it was from a virus or something else, we know how deathly these infectious agents can be. Therefore, it’s important to keep up with your health.

Making A Difference

The book ” Sails the 7 Cs” by Becky Keene and Kathi Kersznowski chapter titled “Conclusion- Becoming Changemaker” discusses all the tools made accessible for students to get creative and critically and computational think. It stresses the importance of making a change within the community. Educators can contribute to making a change by incorporating skype in the classroom and using seventeen, sustainable development goals. Despite the obstacles thrown at some of these educators, they still managed to make impossible ends meet. For example, the text mentions that educators in the low resource community struggle with obtaining effective technology. However, they found a solution using skype in the classroom. This allowed educators in Nigeria to give students the experience of meeting other students in other parts country. When given a chance to skype the United States, the kids in the US realized what it is like not to have. Therefore, the United States raised money to get Nigeria the money they needed for new technology. This forces kids to recognize outside problems and have them connect and work with one another. Then I visited a website where educators are given other resources to make a change within their classroom. I explored the Four-step WE program, which allows students to take action and be expressive. The programs include services that give the students a better understanding of hunger, poverty, and racism. There are many resources educators can use to make a difference in their community.

Reflecting

Using skype within my future classroom walls will be what separates my performance and the experiences and learning in my classroom from others. Despite the subject, I plan on teaching, I will still use this tool to engage in activities, fundraisers, and more with my students. One thing teachers miss out on is diversifying their classrooms. Students can learn and benefit from other’s experiences and backgrounds. Also, I will incorporate sustainable goals and create fundraisers, projects, and events with other countries. I can use the WE four step programs to help getting a better understanding of sustainable development goals. want to allow my students to be changemakers within our global community! WE ARE THE CHANGE!

Flipgrid

This is my first year of using Flipgrid, and I can honestly say I love it! This platform allows educators and students to create short-based videos. It is quite simple, with various features, and that is what I love most about it! On the app’s front page, you can find the topic you will be discussing and the questions you will answer in the video. While recording your response to the questions your teacher assigned, you can put cool features in the background. This app also allows you to upload pictures and videos and allows you to draw during the course of your response. After you are done recording your response, you will then move onto a page where it allows you to add more video or crop the video. Then you move onto the next step where you choose a cover picture, which basically is what will be seen from your peers until they proceed to click on the video. From there, you submit your video, and you will see your title picture uploaded with many other students in your class. Others can watch, like, and comment on your video, and you can do the same. The only difference with commenting on this app is that it is through a video; therefore, you cannot text a response, which I kind of dislike, but my one dislike does not outweigh all the great features this tool has to offer! Here is a short video to explain more!

Using this app in the Future?

Being a future educator, I do see myself using this app. I think it’s a tool students can enjoy exploring and using. Something they could add is making the Fipgrid classrooms accessible to be viewed all around the country. I think people would receive more feedback and views on their videos, which would be cool! Comment and give me your thoughts on this app!

VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP

Greece

During my Virtual field trip, I visited Mykonos Island in the country of Greece. I came across all different sorts of beautiful pictures. Greece is known for the beauty of the islands that they have. Mykonos is often visited due to the sightings and ancient historical events that have happened. Mykonos is mostly composed of granite and is very rocky with a lack of dense vegetation; therefore, plants such as resistant flowers, evergreen bushes, pines, and cypresses are some of the only plants that can withstand the conditions. It is said that some areas around the island include features like palms and olive groves. That’s why the landscape is greener, and the air is fresh and clean. During this trip, I learned the nickname for Mykonos, which is “The Island of the Winds,” and it has received this nickname because of the strong winds that occur. Since this island is a tourist area, there are plenty of resorts to stay at and adventures to go on. Some resorts include Platis Yalós, one of Mykonos’ first resorts to be created and has beautiful views and many attractions. Next was “Little Venice” which is the spot to go if you are looking for something a bit bit more romantic, and throughout the island, you can find bars, cafes, art galleries, and more. Have you ever been to another country?

I have traveled to another country; last year, in 2019, I went to Greece and stayed there with family for two months. Our family lives in a village called Pantanassa, and it was convenient to stay there for us because we also have a house there. I have seen many of the geographic and historical things listed above. The culture in Greece is different compared to American culture. The country is wonderful, and my family and I traveled to tourist places and enjoyed the beaches, food, history, and activities. If you have traveled to another country, please share your experience with me!

“The Princess Weiyoung”

I recently finished watching an episode of ” The Princess Weiyoung” a foreign show; therefore, if you end up watching it and you are nonnative to the language, I suggest putting on subtitles! I found this show on Netflix, so if you look up the name mentioned previously, you will find it.

When talking about the weather during this episode, it began as snowy, and then when the baby was born, a significant change in weather had occurred and then became spring.

I picked up some random things throughout the show. I learned that loyalty and respect were a big part of all throughout the show. When the king was expecting a baby, a big gathering occurred, including a high mighty priest and the grandmother. When the ruler or grandmother entered a room, everyone got down on their knees and bowed. I take that they bow to a higher power as a gesture of respect. Also, instead of sitting on chairs whenever seated, they sat on the floor. The clothes of all the women were beautifully made with beading and silk-like material and are very long. A lot of the dresses the women wore were of the same color to uniform them. Also, the women were submissive to the men, and it seemed as though the men have a lot more dominance over the women. Then I saw some fighting occurred, and the weapons they had fought with were swords and arrows. I noticed that they traveled by foot or they used horses. The surrounding of any place in this episode was always colorful, and landmark with the writing of their language. One-color I did happen to see a lot of was red. A lot of what I’ve listed is different from what we see in shows, but it is also very similar to what we experience. Even though most American cultures don’t have a big gathering with priests and so forth when delivering a baby, we still gather around with friends and family when the time comes. Also, in both cultures, we are assigned a uniform we have to wear when it comes to working. Just as they have a ruler, Americans have a president and congress, which is different but also very much alike. This was definitely very interesting to see how different and alike American culture is to many others.

Thank you guys for reading this blog! to learn more about this episode, check it out on NETFLIX!

Sustainable Developmental Goal

SKYPE IN THE CLASSROOM

I recently completed the course “Teaching Sustainable Developmental Goals,” within this course, I came across a web tool that I am quite familiar with. The web tool that was mentioned in the course was skype. It was discussed that skype can be used in an educator’s classroom to widen the horizon of other communities worldwide. It gives you a few ways of completing the task, for example, inviting guest speakers, having a lesson with others, taking a virtual field trip, or collaborating on a project with others from different parts of the world. Skype in the classroom has created endless room for great experience and opportunities, allowing students to grow in unimaginable ways. Some benefits from skype can be found in this video here and listed below!

One major benefit I have found with tools such as skype is creating an environment of open-minded students. This can slowly eliminate ignorance upon kids who form stereotypes about cultures they have not contacted. Being able to talk and learn about people worldwide will produce an accepting demeanor within the classroom. Instead of judgments being spread around the class, there will be questions and learning made instead.

Although skype is a huge platform to contact people worldwide, many other tools can do the same thing and much more, such as Zoom, Facetime, and Microsoft Teams. Educators have the power to pass on a blessing; therefore, why not use it! Whenever you get the time, please look more into these tools!

Global Educators Tools “Remind”

This fall semester, I have experienced using multiple different web tools. One web tool that I now use daily is “Remind.” This app is primarily used for communication; therefore, being a student, you have access to speaking with your teachers at any hour approved by them. I know that you probably thinking, ” what’s so special about “remind” when there are other ways to contact your teacher for instance, an email.” Well, here are a few reasons why I prefer to use “Remind.”

  1. Its a form of texting which I do on a daily
  2. I receive an immediate response instead of waiting for an educator to read their email, which can take a couple of hours/days. “Remind” gives you a notification as if it were a regular text message
  3. you can see when the person has read your message
  4. Pictures, links, messages
  5. Parents & students have access to this app; therefore, if anybody has any questions at all for the educator, they can contact them through remind and get a quick response
  6. “Remind” is a great tool to build individual relationships with every student. ~Now that I have shared reasons why I use and enjoy the app, Click here to learn more!

How I would Use “Remind” In a classroom

As a future educator, “remind” is a tool that I plan on using. I will set up a classroom with a link in the app and give it to students and parents. This will allow students and their guardians to talk to me personally without setting any conference up. Also, it eliminates the waiting period of getting a response back. Its convents for them and they have a way to get the answers. updates, and progress they desire.
