Hello! and welcome to my first post on my blog! I will be discussing an article I found on Twitter. The article is by JT Ripton and Peter Scott called ” Five ways teachers can use video chat in the classroom.” I found the article by using the hashtag #globalclassroom #edchat
Here are the five ways teachers can use video chat in their classrooms:

1.Collaborative learning with other schools
- This is a great way for students to socialize. Video chat allows the opportunity to connect students with other classrooms from different parts of the world. By doing so, it allows the students to learn about other cultures while engaging in conversations.

2. Frequent and Higher-profile guest speakers
- Sometimes it may be difficult to schedule a guest speaker for your classroom. If you are interested in a high profile speaker, such as someone who would really make an huge impact on your lesson, then setting up a video chat would be attention-grabbing for the students.

3.Virtual field trips
- Imagine taking a field trip wherever you want without leaving the classroom. Virtual field trips allow you to go where you want without the hassle of transportation and permission slips. You can take a tour of a museum and still make it feel as if you were visiting it in person.

4. Connecting with parents
- Building a connection with parents is very important. With parents working long hours these days, it is important to give parents the option to communicate without the worry of missing a conference.
5. Enhancing safety
- Video chat can be used as reporting mechanism for students when they feel unsafe during a field trip. Students are usually under adult supervision, but a video chat system can help the student connect with staff if there is a specific problem. It is also a good way to check up on a students location.
What do I think of the use of video chat in the classroom?
I think it is a great way to teach a lesson. I like the idea for field trips. Although, I feel it is not the same as being at a place in person. It would depend where I wanted to take the class but, I would not use it for all field trips. I would however, use video chat for parent teacher conferences. I think this is a great alternative for parents who either can’t be at two places at once or, just simply have too much going on. It allows the parents to still be involved in their child’s education without the worry of missing out completely.

I like the guest speaker example because since I graduated high school and been in college I never had a guest speaker come to class and talk. It is a good idea to have a guest speaker talk, especially in your field so you know how it feels when you will enter that field based on their experience. The guest speaker always bring new thoughts, ideas and positive from my experience in high school. For example, we had a guest speaker who talked about how he jumped off the San Francisco bridge and how it changed his life on a video chat. It was amazing to see what that person went through and what he felt like in the past even though we didn’t meet him in person. I definitely, agree with you about using video chat for a guest speaker which will make college have more guest speakers for the students.
