Out of Eden

Paul Salopek went on a 21,000-mile journey walking along the path that the very first humans took in Africa. Throughout his journey, he took the time to self-reflect and interpret stories from thousands of years. Salopek goal was to encourage others to stop and observe the world around them. While navigating around the website I came across some very interesting articles that I took an interest to.

Sharing the Journey: A School’s Global Bazaar Celebrates the Out of Eden Walk

This article I took a liking to. St. Martin’s-in-the-Field Episcopal School is hosting international fairs to introduce Out of Eden Walk to students. A grant from the National Association of Episcopal Schools, we made the Global Bazaar. The bazaar showcased the food, clothing, science, literature, and other topics that Paul has explored through his Walk. I think it is a great event to grab people’s attention to explore the world. I like how the students were able to walk around and participate and interact with the locals in the community.

Out of Eden Learn: Connecting Young People Around the World

This article showed a map that represents classrooms enrolled in Out of Eden Learn, the online learning platform. This was designed by Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education to accompany the Out of Eden Walk. Students use interactive platforms to complete activities and post, read and respond to other’s post. The results of this have shown that students are gaining an understanding of other cultures by learning to connect with other young people from different countries. Looking ahead the goal is to incorporate this in teaching methods to create spaces for young people. This is a great way to get students engaged and be interested in learning from other people around the world

“This Is Not a Life”

In the chapter Autumn Wars, this article stuck out to me. The drawing caught my attention which was a drawing made by a refugee child about his view on the war. Paul Salopek takes us to Kilis, Syria, Turkey. As time passes more people flood the camp and its already at its max. The video in the article shows school with children playing. They can’t afford to provide education due to the overcrowding of camp. At one of the homes, a man and wife sat in their home provided by the camp as the man states this life is not a way to live and he would do anything for work. This article opened my eyes to see the issues that are being faced around the world feel grateful for the things that I have. It is important to help spread awareness about communities that require help and work so families can start living a normal life as possible.

This was an amazing project to learn about. I cannot believe her traveled 21,000-mile journey by foot The Out of Eden Walk brings history to a whole new meaning.
