Goals and Challenges to Global Learning

Hey everyone! This week I will be discussing goals and challenges to Global Learning from Chapter 4 of The Global Educator. So far my experience with this book has been informative in so many ways. In this chapter, it has taught me different ways to be a global educator and how to make an impact

Throughout the chapter, teachers shared their goals on global learning:

  • Support and Guide Other Teachers

“I also aim to support other teachers to use online learning systems and to connect globally. I am currently supporting a teacher in Nepal and this means limited internet but even limited connectivity helps build relationships so we can empathize with others.”

Ann Rooney pg The Global Educator

This goal is very important to teachers all across the world. Connecting and sharing ideas with other teachers who don’t have the same resources as us is a great way to build relationships. It creates an understanding of one another. When we work together to achieve the same goal the easier it is for us to continue to support each other.

  • Teaching Students In Other Countries To Be Bilingual
  • To Be Informed With Different Writers From Other Countries
  • To Change The Education System: Emily McCarren for the USA stated

” To change the world for the better. To change the education system to be more inclusive and equitable. To make things better for those who struggle in a system that is not often fair”

This quote stuck out to me. Our education system is amazing compared to other countries that are poor and don’t have the proper resources or teachers. There are people all over the world who have to drop out of school or don’t have a chance to even go to school. Then are also governments that won’t fund a proper education. This is why it is important to educate other cultures on the change that must happen. Teaching children at a young age on global learning will only impact the way of the future. The younger generation is going to be the voice of getting these goals accomplished.

This brings me to the website https://www.globalgoals.org. This consists of 17 goals to better the world by 2030. To find out more about these goals or ways to contribute visit the website!

The next thing I will be discussing are the challenges with global learning. I did some researched online and came across this article on https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/10-barriers-to-education-around-the-world-2/. This talks about the challenges other countries face that are in poverty. This is why Emily McCarren’s goal is to change the education systems. However for education systems to change, poverty has to be fixed and teachers have to be trained correctly to teach their students. To read more on this visit the website!

There are other challenges as well that many global learners face, such as :

  • Time Zones: Being in a different time zone can affect when teachers connect to teach a class.
  • Technology: the availability of technology is difficult in other countries. Some countries are behind in technology and don’t have the resource to learn about the new technology and/or the funds.

“In our country, Venezuela, we face great difficulties, one of which is precisely the technology gap. My society still sees with skepticism the use of technology. My challenge is to demonstrate that technology can open up large and very important experiences. ”

Julio Rosas pg 60 The Global Educator

Within the last few years technology has worked its way more and more inside our classrooms. Teachers must be educated correctly with technology while still being able to teach the traditional way. There is a fear of using technology due to not knowing how to use it. Educators must work together to understand, the technology that will be used in the classrooms. Technology has created a way for teachers and students to be engaged inside and outside of the classroom and has had much success. Technology is just going to keep evolving and the more it does the more it will be incorporated into our education system.

  • Teacher Reluctance– Teachers need to have a strong understanding of one another while collaborating. This is important because it helps students engage more with each other. If another teacher is not putting in the effort that you are, then it’s time wasted.

“The most frustrating piece is the follow-through. So many times people drop the ball and after investing a lot of time and effort it falls flat.”

Aaron Maurer pg 57 The Global Educator

  • Fostering Positive Community Engagement: Many communities block schools from connecting outside due to religious, social and political reasons. Educators must customize positive global engagements to their needs so everyone feels comfortable in offering their support.

It’s so important we build connections around the world. When we listen to one another and help one another we can create change. We will always face challenges but, having strong connections with other educators and gathering people from your community to help towards your goal can make a difference.
