Case Studies

In the Global Educator book, Case Studies 3.7 – Pernille Ripp: Global Read Aloud. GRA is a global reading project that has connected more than 500,000 students on six continents since its inception in September 2010. “The project was created in 2010 with a simple goal in mind; one book to connect the world. From its humble beginnings, the GRA has grown to make a truly global connection with more than 2,000,000 students having participated” (Lindsay, Julie).

I think this case study was interesting to me and informative as it talks about a reading project created for many students around the globe to participate in and be able to read all different book genres. This project is good for all young students to join to read more and become better at reading and understanding the books. This case study was definitely a good decision Ripp made

This case study situation gives many students and readers out there the chance to explore more with different books and join the program. Pernille wrote a new book after this case study that goes along with it. “Pernille has authored a new book, “Passionate readers: The art of reaching and engaging every child” – this book is getting excellent reviews and provides guidance and support for many educators, as well as parents” (Lindsay, Julie). Pernille has such a high insight for the Global Collaboration topic and why it is so important for schools and the education system to be taking part in. This case study connects to global collaboration.

Here is the book you can research to find the case study in to read about, and other case studies as well towards the end of the book. This book has very informative facts and information in it.

Virtual Reality In Classrooms

How is Virtual Reality used in the classroom?

Virtual reality is used to be able to enhance all student learning and engagement. Virtual Reality in education can transform the way that educational content is delivered. It also seems to works on the premise of creating a virtual world that is either real or imagined and allows users not only see it, but also interact with it through a virtual system in the classroom.

What are some of the benefits of using VR in the classroom?

1- Provides outstanding visualizations that aren’t possible in the traditional classroom.

2- Creates interest.

3- Improves the quality of Education in different fields.

4- Increases student engagement

*There are many different benefits of using virtual reality/learning in the classroom with students, but the ones above are the main ones I read about.

What is Gear VR? – The Samsung Gear VR is a virtual reality headset that had been developed by Samsung Electronics, in collaboration with Oculus VR, and manufactured by Samsung. The Gear VR headset also includes a touchpad and back button on the side, as well as a proximity sensor to detect when the headset is turned on and activated.

This video explains how virtual reality helps and benefits students

Virtual reality contributes as a successful global collaboration because it helps students be able to practice motions, seeing objects in front of them move. It also provides an experienced anchor to the instruction that teachers can’t duplicate in another way. The virtual reality doesn’t really end up taking place of anything, but instead it gives the students an immersive experience they wouldn’t be getting if this type of technology wasn’t put in place or created. It gives students the opportunity to see places they never been to, explore things in the classroom virtually, and much more. Teachers use Google Earth VR, Google expeditions, and other virtual reality types.

Above are a couple links that talk about the virtual reality in classrooms and how it is useful and successful in schools for the students.

Autumn Wars

Out of Eden Walk displayed 5 chapters of different visited places in the locations of Cyprus, Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. Throughout this journey, there are a couple landmark points these travelers hit.

The 1st destination that I chose on this walk was Treasure Island. At this destination. It is located near Kellia, Cyprus. It is filled with many mountains and foothills. Over the whole scene hangs a peculiar light, a glaze of steel and lilac, which sharpens the contours and perspectives, and makes each vagrant goat, each isolated carob tree, stand out from the white earth as though seen through a stereoscope” (Byron. Robert). There are some of the oldest, earliest villages found here that were built many years ago. These were built by hunter-gatherers. They were built to have a modernized type look. The interior part of the Cyprus territory is known to be ghostly mountains.

Reconstructed Neolithic shelters at Choirokoitia. The first interiors had no corners.

The second destination on the walk I chose was “Ghost City”. This was located in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus. In this place, a fenced ““Green Line” separates northern and southern Cyprus. It is separated by a barbed-wire scar: a forgotten no-man’s-land, a fossil from an unresolved war that is out of place in today’s Europe. In 1974, Greek nationalists staged a coup in Cyprus. This provided Turkey reason to invade, to protect the ethnic Turkish population. Forty years later, the island remains partitioned. But many Cypriots—Greek and Turkish alike—dream of reunification” (Salopek, Paul). This location visited in the walk gives tourists a view of the lives people live in Cyprus. They talk about wanting to revive this Ghost City. Famagusta has been ringed by a 500-year-old wall of stone, built a long time ago. There are definitely some cool views and buildings to visit in this city in Cyprus.

The 3rd and final destination on this walk of Autumn Wars is “The Hinge”. This landmark is located in Kirit, Turkey. This area or viewpoint was covered in the oldest plowed fields in the Cilician Plain of southeastern Turkey. Out here, you will find many mules wandering about, and places to actually buy cargo mules. There are many villages through this city and farmers and fields where they grow vegetables. There is stone roads throughout this area that people can adventure on. So many fun attractions and things to see and adventure too. This would be a very cool trip spot to go too for someone who likes to explore new places. I found some of these facts and places pretty cool and interesting. This is definitely something different than New Jersey.

Changemakers

While exploring the WE website learning about the teachers and extra tools used by them in their classrooms helped me find some new useful ideas for when I become a teacher in a couple years. In these schools, they have a program where students can learn and understand more about current issues in our world today such as “hunger, poverty, access to education, diversity and inclusion, racism and black racism, the environment and sustainability, LGBTQ2IA+, equality, human rights, Black Lives Matter, proactive mental health” (https://www.we.org/en-US/our-work/we-schools/we-schools-campaigns-and-curriculum/)

This four-step program these schools have, bring students to a better understanding about the world today and what situations people are dealing with in their lives, and what they can do to help keep these from reoccurring so much.

WE, teachers, ensures that every teacher in every school around the globe has all kinds of free access to the educational tools and types of training they need to set them and their students up for future success in their schooling and future jobs they obtain so they can do a great job and fulfill their goals. WE teachers programs have many offerings included in it such as free tools and resources, an online teacher community, the we teachers awards, and etc. Many different programs and benefits come out of this WE teachers and schools involved. This is what I found interesting and will use in my future classroom. I will use these tools and help my students have a better understanding of the world around them and the issues that are currently going on in the world at that time, and past events and issues in our world that have effected us in many different ways.

Virtual Field Trip

Trip Choice: “9/11 Tribute Memorial”

In New York City, there is a 9/11 memorial that was built after the horrific 9/11 event that took place in September 2001. There is also a big museum underground that talks about the 9/11 events and has all different displays of the towers, firetrucks, names of people. There is a whole wall inside this museum where names are listed of people who died during 9/11. Outside, where the twin towers had fallen, are now pools of remembrance and around them list all the police and fire departments that were involved in 9/11 who died.

On this virtual tour, it explains how someone to donate to the 9/11 museum, articles about this terrible event that happened in our country, tribute stats explaining how many people have come to visit this memorial and museum, and how many tours have been done since it opened. There is also something called “One World Observatory”.  Here you can see its resilience firsthand at the top of the tallest building (World Trade Center) in the Western Hemisphere. One World Observatory provides unique, panoramic views of New York City.

The 9/11 Museum shows different artifacts, murals from this day. The museum takes people at least 2 hours to go through as it has a lot of information to give off to people. I went to this memorial and museum a few years ago and it was a great experience. A lot of information was shown throughout this museum, I would like to go back and take someone new with me that’s into history and never been there. I would highly recommend going to New York City and visiting this amazing 9/11 experience through the Pools memorial and museum underground.

Show: “Chopped”

Intro: The show “Chopped” is a cooking show where a couple people compete against each other in rounds to see who the best cook is to make it to the final round and the prize of a lot of money. They get evaluated by 3-4 judges each time to see who’s dish is the best.

Chopped season 47 episode 7.

Watching this in the English language like we normally do on a daily basis, everything is basic, and easy to tell what each person is doing. The background setting was simple and expressed the mood of the show. Each person moved around the same way when they needed too, to get food supplies for their dish. Everyone reacted to the setting of the show and time they had in their own way, depending on how difficult they felt the situation was. Watching it in a different language made these circumstances change into a different perspective. The characters moved around differently than in an English language view. The setting of the show was in a different scene-setting to let people view the show on how people in another country or language see it. This way it gives people the opportunity to see the different settings, cultures, and actions of the characters.

In their culture (Spanish), they travel differently through the show as they see observations differently than we do. They use different types of food ingredients for their dishes than others used. Their spices and ingredients are similar and different apart from our culture. It also all depends on how they use it in their foods.

Communicating Using Powerpoint

When using Powerpoints, students love to personalize their presentations with fonts, images, animations, transitions, hyperlinks, 3D images, digital ink, and more. You can speak to someone through PowerPoint.

How? You can type out messages onto the slides and use images, emojis, GIF’s, and other types of effects to set the tone for your message to someone. Communicating through Powerpoint is something most people don’t know how to do very well or know about.

What is Presenter Coach? – It is an artificial intelligence-powered technology assistant that can help teachers and students prepare for presentations without having to stand up in front of a real audience at that time. It is easily and freely available for anyone to try when using PowerPoint.

Presenter Coach works in a way by listening to the sound of your voice as you go on and present your project, and it scans each slide you create for content. The coach will give you suggestions for more inclusive language and help keep you and the presentation on track for grammar and other language and writing mistakes.

Remind (Remind 101)

I chose the tool Remind or Remind.com.

I chose this tool because many of my former teachers all throughout high school used this to keep us students on track for upcoming events and assignments that were due. This tool is very helpful for teachers to use with their students in school. What this app can do, is the teacher can send out a notification to just one student or the entire class and their parents if need be for an upcoming event. For examples: Back to School Night on October 14th or an upcoming test the students should start studying for.

What I always found unique about it is how your teacher can communicate with you other than by an email. The teacher can send out quick reminds to his/her students so they can see the notification automatically and either reply back or send a quick emoji in return so the teacher knows that student saw the message sent out.

I would use it in my classroom to send out messages and quick reminds to my students about upcoming tests, assignments, due dates, events at the school so both the students and their parents can see what’s coming up or going on at their child’s school soon.
