Dyslexia Awareness

Last week, I took the Microsoft education course “Dyslexia Awareness: In partnership with Made By Dyslexia” to further educate myself on the needs of my future students. Here is what I learned…

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is the most common learning difference, with it affecting about 10% to 20% of the entire population. This learning difference is genetic, so if you have dyslexia, it is likely that others in your family do as well. Dyslexia affects how the brain processes information causing difficulty in areas like reading writing, spelling, and math.

Ways to identify dyslexia?

Dyslexia can be identified as early as preschool. In preschool, children with dyslexia may struggle with rapid naming of letters, colors, and objects. These individuals will show issues in manipulating and remembering sounds and words, ultimately making reading and spelling difficult. They will also struggle with executive functions like organization and concentration.

Strengths that come along with dyslexia?

Although dyslexia comes with many weaknesses, there are also many strengths that come along with this learning difficulty. Individuals with dyslexia are commonly highly creative, innovative, and good problem-solvers. These strengths, are greatly valued in the 21st-century workplace, as many people with dyslexia go on to work in businesses and become entrepreneurs.
