Using Google Lit Trips in the Classroom

This week, I am researching virtual reality and how it can be used for online global collaboration. For this assignment, Google Lit Trips stood out to me so I decided to look further into it.

What is Virtual Reality?

Before doing my research on Google Lit Trips, I decide to get some more information on virtual reality. Marxent Labs defined virtual reality as the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. This technology creates a three-dimensional environment that seems real. The first time I used virtual reality, I was so astonished at how real everything had seemed and I felt like I actually in that environment.

What are Google Lit Trips

Google Lit Trips uses downloadable files on Google Earth to take students on the same journey as the characters in the literature that they are reading.  Along the way, students encounter ‘stops’ that can contain discussion questions or more information on the current location they are at.

Classroom Uses

When using Google Lit Trips, teacher have the options to use a pre-made trip, create their own trip, or the feature that allows you to request a specific novel. Google Lit Trips is a great way to get your students engaged and interested in what they are learning. On these trips, students gain a better understanding of the locations the characters visit in their novel. By doing this, students gain a better understanding of the culture and history of different locations in their books. You can see an example of a lesson plan using Google Lit Trips here!
