Watching a Telenovela
This week, I watched the first episode of a Spanish television show called Reina de Corazones, or Queen of Hearts. This show is on Telemundo and is considered a ‘telenovela’ which is basically a Latin American soap opera. The show begins on Reina and Victor’s wedding day, but quickly flashes back to eight years ago. Then the audience learns that Reina met Nicolás Núñez, her eventual lover, at a wedding under the impression that the other was a rich invited guest. When actually, Reina was a seamstress for the bride and Nicolás was a valet driver.
There were many similarities between Latin American culture and my own. In this show, financial status was greatly valued, which is very much like American culture. The two main characters, Reina and Nicolás, pretended to be rich so the other would be off put by their financial status. This show gave a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the rich in Latin America. Both Reina and Nicolás worked for people much wealthier than themselves, which ultimately resulted in them being around many wealthy people and attending large events. This is similar to American culture, as many celebrities have assistants and other people working under them that get brought into their rich lifestyle.
