Can Technology Cost You Your Job?

“You Can Get Fired For What You Post Online”

Technology can be a blessing in the workplace. However, one wrong word may cost you your job. Sure, after a long hard day at work, one may turn to their social media as an outlet for their feelings and a place to rant or vent. But, be careful and be smart when using social media.

In the article, ‘You Can Get Fired for What You Post Online’, written by Alison Doyle and published by thebalancecareers.com, Doyle breaks down different scenarios as to how one can be fired by misusing technology.

  1. Violating Company Policy
    1. I like how the author stated: “Even if your company does not have one; a good rule of thumb is to avoid sharing anything about your job on social media that would make you cringe if you said it aloud to your company’s CEO of your manager.”
    2. Some violations may include sharing personal company information, negative comments about your job or clients, inappropriate comments and deceptive posts. I believe all of these are good reasons to make your company upset or angry and result in firing you. Especially, in this time period, people will dig and dig on social media to find that one tweet from years ago just to ruin someone’s career. It happens all of the time. Don’t post any racist, ignorant or untruthful posts, because they will get back to you.
  2. Job Searching From Work
    1. I found this scenario a bit humorous, honestly. I understand that there may be people out there who are completely miserable at their jobs and are just craving a new scene, but searching for a new job on your work computer, at work, should give your boss enough reason to realize you are better off somewhere else.

There are always ways to be smart about social media.

  1. Post smart- think before you post!
  2. Be intelligent- don’t send your resume around from work, use your own devices!
  3. Be prepared- be prepared for the consequences if you post something inappropriate.

Overall, DON’T GET FIRED. Do not cost yourself your job or a potential new one just because you are mindlessly using technology. Getting fired can make it harder to get another position at a new company. Thinking before you post is key and crucial. My personal advice would be that if you are even thinking if you should post something or not, you probably should not be posting it.
