My thoughts on twitter can only be positive. For over a decade I’ve shied away from most social media sites apart from MySpace (a very long time ago) before switching to Facebook. I still find it hard to go online and just open up to people I’ve never physically met. With Twitter, however a platform where a wealth of knowledge can be shared, it is positively priceless. I cringed at the thought of having to listen to local news or read the paper because it’s all just so downright negative and depressing. So how can I stay informed and up to date? Well with Twitter I can follow those whose opinions I value and those who share the knowledge I seek. On the plus side, it’s all positive!
Via the twitter chats that I’ve had and my global learning class, I’ve learned about the paradigm shift towards flat learning and how I can be a better global citizen. Initially, it sounded so easy, but you quickly learn that every teacher in every country faces a unique set of hurdles to make global learning possible. And by sharing those accomplishments, others can apply methods that have been tried and tested to achieve similar goals. I could not be more convinced that global learning is the key to a global mindset and hence a global people.
I’ve also learned about the United Nation’s 2030 sustainable goals. I had never heard of it previously. This being such great news, of course, local news would not cover it. I learned about the 17 goals, all very attainable, that we are going to meet by 2030. That’s only in 10 more years! It would be amazing to see how different we’ll feel about the world we live in.

Hi Kirby!
I just have to start by saying, wow, Myspace….what a throwback!! I have to agree with you that Twitter provides an unparalleled opportunity in education. However, as you said, it can sometimes be difficult to open up online. Digital privacy is a difficult topic because there is a line we have to walk, as global citizens, of “how much do we share online vs. what is too much to share”. I wonder what sorts of strategies you use in order to open up online, and how do you ensure you’re not opening up too much of yourself to the online world?
